Undervolting - introduction

We’ve finally arrived at the main topic of the article.

Undervolting will be carried out using MSI Afterburner. It is constantly enhanced to officially support the latest graphics cards, so gamers using the app for a long time should make sure to run the update. You can download this application from two safe sources:

When you install MSI Afterburner, it’s possible (and we recommend it) to also have the RivaTuner Statistic Server. It allows displaying frame rates and component parameters on the screen. If you’re unfamiliar with the interface, we’ll explain it. The skin that we’re using usually is the MSI Cyborg.

The indicators display core and memory timing, GPU voltage, and temperature placed on the left and right. The sliders in the middle allow users to change the card’s parameters. It’s worth mentioning that the manufacturer can limit some (for example, the Power Limiter). It’s also possible to check the system information, open the MSI AB website or run the MSI Kombustor (it helps check the GPU’s stability). There’s also a possibility to apply/save the changes and restore the factory defaults.

In the settings, there are several tabs, but the most important ones are the following:

  1. General – if it’s not checked, then you’d better enable -> unlock voltage control and unlock voltage monitoring

2. Monitoring – you can enable the parameters displayed directly on the screen. To activate the option, select the “tick” on the left-hand side and then below Show on OSD. Usually, it’s best to enable the GPU temperature, voltage, power consumption, % of usage, and core clock.

3. Profiles – you can assign the profiles to a keyboard shortcut, so changing the frequencies from stock to Undervolted is possible.
