Taking the unit out of the packaging, we can see that is has a very simple and no fuss interface. We get a series of 6 LEDs on the front left-hand side of the F4-220. Two indicate power and LAN connectivity respectively, and the remaining 4 (oddly enough) correspond to the 4 hard drives you may install.

On powering the unit on with the hard touch power button, any installed HDDs/SSDs will initially show up as solid red, then (as they are initialized) flashing green, then solid green, indicating they are ready for use. The powering up of the unit, with a single 2TB drive, took about 35s from me pressing the button to the 'HDD 1' light becoming solid in colour.

Turning the unit around, we see the rear IO and dual 80mm fan vents. I found it interesting that this was chosen over a single larger fan, which - to my mind - is always preferential unless Terra Master prefer operating thermals vs. silence? We shall have to see later, naturally, if the use of two smaller fans negatively impacts the 220's acoustic performance when under demand. The rear IO is fairly limited, and you can clearly see where a secondary LAN 2 port would be. As it stands, we have slots for power, 1x USB 2.0 and 1x USB 3.0, and the obligatory Gigabit Ethernet port. Standard, but nothing extra (a theme which does seem to be continuing here).

The specifications list for this unit is actually very extensive, so much so that listing the entire lot here would be a little foolhardy. If you want to check it out in all its glory, however, feel free as the link is here. The most important specs, however, I will list out.

  • CPU - Intel Celeron J1800 (Goldmont), up to 2.58Ghz.
  • Memory - 2GB (1x 2GB).
  • Expansion slots - 4.
  • Max Int. Storage - 48TB.
  • Supported RAID configs - 0, 1, 5, 6, 10.
  • Dimensions - 227 x 225x 136 mm.
  • Mass - Net Weight: 2.28Kg Gross Weight: 3.52Kg.
  • Supported OS - Windows (7 & higher), MacOS (10.7 & higher), Linux (all).
  • Warranty - 2 years.

We do lack any kind of readout as to the NAS status (or, for that matter, the status of the internal drives), but that is arguably what the software is for. To be honest, I would rather that than have a manufacturer spend money on features that can be done better by an application. That is my honest opinion and it's one that I have spouted a fair few times through my reviews on this site!

Flip the unit upside down and you have four rubber feet to further help dissipate any resonating hums/whines that the internal HDDs may make. Of course, if you're the type to only use SSDs, I guess you needn't worry yourself with this point.
