Software/Firmware Setup

Browsing the menus
Xincom have a few versions of firmware that are available with the router at present. There are a couple of reviews out there that have used the first revision and found a few problems in it. The main issue seemed to be ports being left closed but not stealthed. We will have a little look at this in the security section. The other issue was the lack of a decent logging function, which I am glad to say is actually supported now.

I will leave you a few screen shots to show you some of the functions available and how to implement them within the router.

In this screen we can set a default group and four seperate groups of users. We can restrict access on a port by port basis or a port range. We can stop users from sending out a number of requests, e.g. Prohibit Ping

Advanced Screen

There are a host of advanced functions that can protect a range of ports from things such as translation. There are a number of ports that are used for attacks, the most well known ones can be blocked quite simply by not translating those incoming requests on to the LAN. There are also options to drop any incoming pings. Have a look at the pics and see what else xincom offer you

DHCP

Basic and more advanced DHCP settings that allows you to configure the DHCP range and lease time

Load Balancing

You can define how balanced your load balancing can be. You can define how the router decides which connection to use. Options such as per byte, or per session or per packet. Then you can say what percentage each connection should be utilised.

Reporting

Most routers have a logging feature, and it is also where the cheaper routers tend to fall down. The Xincom router does not fall down. There are a nice set of logs that let the user know what is happening. There is a syslog function that sends administrative alerts, there is also the option to send mail to a mail server so you can recieve any critical errors by e-mail.
