Final Words & Conclusion

The MSI AXE5400 words well and simply is a handy USB adapter designed to enhance wireless connectivity for various computing devices. Modern laptops typically come equipped with WiFi modules supporting both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. However, the AXE5400 proves beneficial for specific scenarios:

  • Retrofitting older laptops with limited WiFi capabilities, offering a cost-effective alternative to complete hardware upgrades.
  • Providing connectivity for devices where wired connections aren't feasible.
  • Enhancing security through WPA3 protocol, ensuring safe internet access, even in public spaces like cafes.

For laptops our conclusion does need to include a note, this is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 designed device, which has a (theoretical ) throughput of 10 Gbps, if you connect it to an older laptop with USB 2.0, then you'll end up at 480 Mbit/s (maximum theoretical data throughput 53 MByte/s) minus error correction.

Concluding

The AXE5400 stands out for its ease of use and smooth setup process. If you do not have compatible driver, then after you cannect the unit to your USB port a driver suite will install itself, and that is very handy if  you do not have ethernet or WLAN available. You can easily insert the unit into a USB port or alternatively though the dock, the dongle stays securely in place, giving you steady and reliable connectivity. The one note we'd like to make is that the cable used might be sturdy and braided, it's stiff as well.  What's impressive about the AXE5400 is its ability to extend its reach on the 2.4 GHz band, going beyond what your typical laptop WiFi can do. That's a nice plus, especially when you're traveling and need a stable, secure connection in places like hotels. One thing to note, though, is that the AXE5400 only connects via USB-A, which means it won't plug directly into devices that only have USB-C ports. Having the option for both types of connections would have made it even more flexible. Despite this minor hiccup, the AXE5400's price tag of $59 feels just right when you consider its solid build, straightforward setup, and impressive WiFi speeds. Plus, with the addition of WiFi 6E support and WPA3 security, you're getting a device that's not just fast, but also safe and secure. Now, let's hope for a WiFi 7 model soon as well.
