I just run Seatools or HDtune before I start using a new HDD. When everything checks out perfectly fine I know I won't be stashing my stuff on a faulty product. After that I do a full format as well and then it's ready for use.

That is the right thing to do before using any HDD. If and only if it passes a full sector-by-sector scan using the manufacturer own utility it can then be used safely. Also to avoid damages to any HDD never use a PC, NAS, gaming console or decoder with HDUs without a good UPS like the APC ones. (it's better having a UPS on everything even if there are no HDUs, protecting even just a tv set with a UPS is a good thing too) Most HDUs defective sectors are caused by current spikes and power surges which cause both mechanical HDUs as well SSDs to die quickly. Only a good UPS can prevent that.

Never had any bad experiences with any brand except Maxtor. Though I'm very keen on maintenance like defragging and the sort.
Indeed. I don't think I ever had a Maxtor that didn't fail at some point. I haven't bought one of theirs in about 10 years. I'd place Seagate only slightly behind Western Digital as far as reliability. Of the 6 Seagates I've purchased (over 8 years), only one failure thus far. For Western Digital, I had a 150GB Raptor fail and most recently, I got a 3TB black that was DOA. About that dead drive... the next 3TB WD drive I got was fine and is the fastest 3.5 HDD I've ever used, 3x faster than some of my older ones. It's fast enough that I felt compelled to move my 42GB BF4 installation off of my SSD and onto the 3TB. The map load time isn't much different. Very impressed with the speed of my new WD Black. Well it is nice that a 6TB HDD is being released. With my computer upgrade I am looking at a 4TB drive.

Forget HDD's. How about giving us cheaper high-capacity SSD's?
You buy SSDs for speed, not capacity. If you're waiting for SSDs to be high capacity like HHDs are you will be waiting a very long time. The price/capacity ratio is getting better but it's still got a long way to go as I am sure you have noticed. For now if you want a high capacity SSD the closest you can come is an hybrid.

Aside from SSD's getting cheaper I also want HDD's to get bigger. Once we get to 10TB per drive at a decent price I might consider getting a NAS (right now imo it's to expensive, with the ratio of HDD's I'll be needing). Currently stacking HDD's with backups in an airtight sealed box and I take one out every once and so often for backups trhoug eSATA. It's not practical but it sure as hell is a cheapo solution xD. Though once we get 10TB HDD's I might consider ditching that idea and finally get a decent NAS with a RAID setup.

I see all kinds of brands break at work. Mostly WD drives but that's due to them being quite overused in many systems. One thing keeps coming back every time and again... the HDD's that fail, the majority of times it's with people that had horrible maintenance and their C:\ drive looks like a bloody trash bin. As far as personal use goes, I never had a HDD break on me, only a Maxtor being DOA.

ssd are getting very inexpensive. I`m looking at a 1tb samsung evo at around 450 bucks, that aint bad at all. my 500gb was 259. I held off a long time on buying an ssd

SSDs are getting quite a bit cheaper. My 256GB Crucial M4 was over $400 when I bought it. I wouldn't pay anywhere near that much for an SSD again though. I'll revisit SSDs when I can get a 1TB drive for less than $200.
TBH I've only ever had bad experiences with Seagate drives... But things may have changed.
I'm on my first Seagate drive in years and so far, so good. I'm actually quite pleased with it. Performance is great, the drive stays very cool and it's extremely quiet....unlike my WD Caviar Black 500GB that gets noisy and hot.
You ever heard of backups? Retard
You are aware that backups don't prevent harddrive failure, right? You're also aware that the larger the harddrive, the longer it takes to restore the data, right? You really shouldn't call someone else a retard. Especially when your post lacks any intelligence to begin with.

mjw is a troll and not worth my time, thats why I reported him and left it at that, I would call him the same but I do not want to insult millions of people.

I just checked the current prices on the Crucial M500/550 and Sammy Evo 1TB. Not bad at all. 365-400euros for a 960/1TB SSD!? If I wasn't in need for a few TB of space since I'm full, I would have gotten one those bad boys.

Would never buy a seagate again after how many have died on me. Yet I have a Western Digital from years ago thats still going strong

lol yeah .. all of the seagate drives I've purchased have failed. ALL of them. It's so weird. The ones in my dad's ancient PC's still work but they're practically from another era :P A lot of folks have had better luck than I had with their drives but I wouldn't trust such a massive amount of data on a drive made by them ... restoring so much data will be a nightmare :P

Same. Got several repaired certified running. All my wd running no problem.

Yeah I found that 500gb ssds from Samsung's 840 evo series are decently priced around 270ish depending on where you look. Also my primary HDD in my current rig is a 750gb Seagate drive and it is a tad over 4 years old and going strong.

:D Dry your eyes you big baby. Just because you cant afford these big hard drives doesnt mean everyone else shouldnt have them.

No but they guard against data loss which is this guys issue here 🙄 Warranties guard against harddrive failure. Enjoyed your fail 😉
