It depend, on workstation there is more and more SATA and less SAS... For a lot of duty it is enough to have SATA.
True, but workstations are also getting more and more PCIe lanes, where a SAS controller could be used instead. Motherboards don't come with as many SATA ports as they used to, and a high-end workstation would likely use multiple M.2 or U.2 drives (which leech off of SATA). So, if you wanted high-performance storage for your applications but oodles of relatively cheap storage, a discrete controller is likely the best choice anyway.
