Personally, I think it's the correct move. No mixing of some Ryzen 4000 with Zen 2 cores and other Ryzen 4000 with Zen 3 cores.

Agree, there has been confusion before between Zen and Zen 2 on some of the cheaper parts. AMD's naming convention is still far better than Intels mobile naming though.

Better late than never. I guess AMD did hear people complaining about the generation mismatch between desktop and mobile in nomenclature. As much as the manufacturers would wish for people to stop paying attention to what's under the hood (even if they use the info gleefully in ads), we are talking about the technology industry here, so of course people will want to know.

With it being called 5000 instead, will it still get supported on b450 mobos, I was gonna put a zen 3 on mine final form before I got AM5

Exciting times, can't wait for October, might also get Big Navi later, I just hope it won't need more than 300w and has at least 12GB VRAM.

The support of zen 3 on gen 400 chipset is something that for now from all the slides has always been denied. I still hope they change their mind somehow

They reversed this and said X470 and B450 boards will support Zen 3.

If it would be 5000 series, than from purely marketing perspective, I don't think it would make sense to not do DDR5 introduction with it. I know the previously shown roadmaps say otherwise, but from a business sense, in order to build and keep its lead on Intel, it would make sense to introduce DDR5 a bit early than intended earlier. Its just a hunch at this moment, lets see what happens on Oct 8.

There won't be DDR5 with Zen 3.

There is a rumor that Zen 3 will top only with 12 cores as opposed to 16, i hope we can see the 5950X which i'm waiting for very much! AMD seems to be very confident in Zen 3 arch and i hope they can finally achieve those high GHZ speeds that intel is so desperately hanging on to.

Im aiming at 5800X 10c/20t would a nice upgrade over my 2700X. We'll see how does it reflects the prices when there is no competition.

yawn
data/avatar/default/avatar40.webp
well, i just hope that can finally beat the 8700k or even the 10400f with lower prices and less overheat

5800X you will be mine ! Hope it's at least on i7-10700K level of performance.

it will be on 10900k level with the same amount of cores and threads. 😉

Same boat.... its a purely gaming rig so i hope AMD beats intel this time, i want some pci 4 storage for loading times xD

Seeing how 3800X is already at 10700K's level of performance, bar games relying solely on the clock speed of a couple of cores, it's unimaginable 5800X wouldn't be much better. It would be a total failure otherwise.

Perfect move... not only about the name confusion but how there is no competition at CPU market today, is not necessary 16 core... with 12 cores they can hit more GHZ and draw less power... The 5800-5900 will stay on pair with Intel in games... so... to the marketshare of Intel will be on the floor... today already is 80-20...

Is not that you swap memory so easily, you need a new controller, new motherboards, you need ram availability at launch. If the cpu is good, you want to launch it with an available ecosystem. Later you can swap the io part that is still separated i believe, and put a ddr5 controller, when the ddr5 are actually available everywhere
