I don't get why this is such a surprise. Both Nvidia and AMD do this all the time, especially with mobile parts. I think people just always look for something to dramatize over. It's never cool when it happens but, to point fingers specifically at AMD is kinda disgusting, when Just about every company I can think of did this at one point or another.

and this is why my 5850 is still 'current' 🙂

So this kinda like nvidia renamed the 5series to 6series and gave them a bit of an overclocking. Nothing new here, but for the rather avg visuals of games of late its becoming a running joke that one must spend upwards of NZ$800 just to get an avg framerate of 50 and thats before you chuck in a bit of AA.

Renaming an ENTIRE gfx lineup from top to bottom without even a SINGLE, no matter how subtle change/improvement is a rather unique case in GPU history. No need form drama, but even less for defending the practice of empty rebrands. So yeah, it's a stinker.

this shouldnt be allowed. ok if you want to change the name, fine, but at least make it very clear it is an older released card i.e call a 7970 a 7970re (re for rebranded/rehashed). otherwise to me it's just a con. i guess peeps can send it back once they realise it's not what they expected...
If they did that though, they wouldn't be able to whack the prices up. :P

What a brilliant idea. Renaming 7970 to 7970 Rebrand ?? Can we get more of these??

maybe they got rid of their gpu fab when they were making cut backs, now they're just running on the last of their stock. What was there plan, just do a bunch of paper releases to remind people your still around.

Thanks. Great you think it's brilliant. How about 7970revxxx (as in revised? slighly better perhaps...triple xxx to imply powah). Honestly I thought it pretty obvious.... P.S I didnt actually say "rebrand" but was giving an example of how you could change a name whilst retaining some of the original to give customers an idea of what the card is, not giving it a completely different name which some might argue (and quite rightly) could be construed as misleading.

they kinda pulled out themselves from CPU market, now they are trying to pull out themselves from GPU market. Fire these "Brilliant" minded people from AMD.

I think the best thing for them would be to just dedicate their time and resources to apus/mobile market.

These are strictly OEM cards.... Even NVidia does this for OEM cards. The 300 series from NVidia was nothing but rebranded 200 series cards....sold to OEMs. There's a GT640 that's a rebranded Fermi card, sold to OEMs. OEMs (Dell, HP, IBM, NEC, Gateway, Acer, etc) aren't marketing to us....they're marketing to people that are looking for pre-built computers. This rebrand doesn't effect us....until we get people buying these computers then coming here to complain that they're card is under-performing.

releasing the same GPUs again as "new" is one thing, but at least name them something different. Even "HD 7970+" or something like that would be understandable (still dodgy) as it is this is going to produce plenty of confusion for most people. :/

You dont wanna see what will happen to Nvidia prices, neither Intel's.
