AMD RV790 and RV740 in 40 nm March 2009

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Nvidia used the still ongoing Consumer Electronics Show to establish two new high-end products, namely GTX 285 and GTX 295, and thus is back at the top. The fact that AMD will not keep it like this should be obvious, and that is why we have inquired at a, in the past very reliable AMD power, about what things AMD would able to come up against Nvidia with.

Spontaneously two names fell into this conversation: RV740 and RV790. The former is a well-known in the rumor mill, VR-Zone has already unmasked the specifications of the chip, and using the tape-out, you could also conclude that the RV740 would come in spring.
The chip will be the successor to the RV730, although it could still remain at the market some time, and will redefine AMD's middle class. In things of performance the strongest model will move up to HD 4830 and HD 4850.

Large uncertainty on the other hand about an update on the performance segment. Would AMD hold the RV770 current until the RV870 or put an update between, which is quite pushing depending on the launch of the RV870, concerning that Nvidia will send a distinctly modified GT200 in persona of the GT212 into the race in the second quarter.
The rumors included everything from a RV770 with better frequency to a RV770 that had to more SIMD units (960 SPs, 48 TMUs), and also the codenames were shuffled: Super RV770, RV775 and RV790.

According to our source, AMD's next performance chip will be called RV790, enter the market as HD 4900, and be crafted in 40 nm like RV740. There is still silence about the amount of stream processors. But we can assure that there will be more than with the RV770, so that the RV790 will not just be a half-hearted frequency update.
Both chips, RV740 and RV790, are announced for March. Though a launch within the CeBIT would be suggestible, no one wanted to determine the date yet [via hardware infos].

DRAM module makers increase prices

Memory 234 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

DRAM module makers Kingston Technology, Transcend Information, A-Data Technology and Power Quotient International (PQI) have increased their prices following the recent surge in DRAM chip quotes to US$1. A-Data and PQI are expected to be able to return to profitability as a result, according to industry sources.

DRAM pricing dropped to US$0.50 in mid-December and the current quotes for effectively tested (eTT) 1Gb DDR2 of US$1 represent an increase of 100% within one month. It is possible quotes will increase to US$1.50 in the short term, the sources noted.

DRAM module prices have risen over 10% since the end of December. The highest quote for 1GB DDR2 modules on January 8 was US$10, and contract quotes for the first half of January are around US$8.50. If quotes for 1GB DDR2 modules can top US$10, DRAM contract quotes may continue to increase by up to 15-20%, the sources said.

Transcend, A-Data and PQI all indicated that the reason for the increase in module pricing was to reflect current DRAM prices. Market watchers are optimistic about module makers' first-quarter sales as a result of increasing DRAM and NAND flash prices.

What do CPU 256 cores look like in Windows ?

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

An Intel employee published a screenshot of the Windows Server 2008 R2 task manager on a system with a chip with 256 cores:

Sometime between now and when we're more likely to see machines with this level of parallelism it might be an appropriate area for some UI redesign. I don't know many IT administrators or developers that have a 30" LCD monitor, okay I know one and it isn't me unfortunately.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 group logical processors into sub groups and it would therefore make sense that the task manager be redesigned to show the performance of processors by group. Without which you'll definitely need a 30" LCD. That said however, if you can afford a 256 logical processor machine then you'll probably be able to find a few extra dollars for a large display.

Windows 7 Beta Goes Public + download links

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Here are a couple of very fast direct links for you for Windows 7 beta 32-bit and Windows 7 beta 64-bit.

These are straight from Microsoft and the transfer rate right now on my download is 900Kb/sec. These are straight from Microsoft. This is a DVD ISO, which you'll need to burn on a DVD. Download the ISO, burn a DVD and start living the ultra-fantastic lifestyle of a Windows 7 user. The Beta expires August 1, 2009.

The new version has been well received by testers and certainly it looks good in demos. Gadgets can now be anywhere in the desktop rather stuck in a bar at the side but the biggest difference is in the revamped task bar.

However, I will have to wait for Microsoft to get things straightened out before I can get a working key. Here is a short video demonstrating some of the new features in Windows 7.

AMD Reveals Cloud Supercomputer, Video Games Server-side Rendering

Processor 721 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

AMD and OTOY unveiled plans for a new supercomputer they believe will revolutionize entertainment.  By calculating all relevant data sever-side and then streaming the results to online devices, AMD claims the platform can bring video games and other "graphically-intensive applications" to "virtually any type of mobile device with a web browser without making the device rapidly deplete battery life or struggle to process the content."

"Imagine playing the most visually intensive first person shooter game at the highest image quality settings on your cell phone without ever having to download and install the software, or use up valuable storage space or battery life with compute-intensive tasks," teased AMD digital media and entertainment director Charlie Boswell.  In the announcement, video game publisher Electronic Arts expressed its optimism, saying that it looks "forward to the new customers we can reach and the new interactive expressions that emerge from revolutionary technology like the AMD Fusion Render Cloud," and was joined on-stage by Lucasfilm, Dell and HP.

Boswell detailed another possible use, suggesting that users could watch a movie on their cell phone, then "seamlessly" continue the movie on their HDTV in full resolution when they get home. The supercomputer is also said to provide "remote real-time rendering of film and visual effects graphics." Dubbed the "AMD Fusion Render Cloud," the supercomputer will be powered by AMD Phenom II processors, AMD 790 chipsets and ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics processors. OTOY noted plans for the system to be ready by the second half of 2009, but it was unclear if OTOY was referencing its software or the supercomputer itself.
