MSI unveiled a significant AMI BIOS update for their Intel 700 and 600 chipset mainboards. This development caught the attention of hardware expert chi11eddog, who revealed that the update, marked as beta version 7D89v1B1, had enabled the support for DDR5 Memory with a capacity of up to 256 GB. In the past, configuring such high-capacity memory required complex procedures, including disabling features like Above 4G, Resizable BAR, and remapping, according to insights from an industry insider. However, MSI has addressed this issue in their latest update, eliminating the need to disable these features for DDR5 memory to function smoothly.

Chi11eddog tested the update on his MSI Z790 Carbon MAX WIFI motherboard, equipped with an Intel Core i9-14900K CPU and a whopping 256 GB of DDR5-4800 memory (4 x 64 GB modules). Wccftech has hinted at the possibility of conducting additional tests to determine the maximum supported speeds with high-capacity memory kits. For those who prioritize memory capacity over speed, these updated solutions provide an ideal option. The adoption of the Compression Attached Memory Module (CAMM) standard in the laptop memory segment has led manufacturers to transfer technological advancements to desktop form factors. The forthcoming 64 GB DDR5 modules offer twice the capacity compared to the best previous-generation solutions. In 2023, the availability of non-binary DIMM kits, ranging from 24 to 48 GB, pushed desktop memory capacities to a maximum of 192 GB.
