AMD To Release X870E Chipset and Ryzen 9000 Granite Ridge CPUs

AMD is set to release the X870E chipset as part of its 800-series, designed to work with the future to be released Ryzen 9000 aka codenam Granite Ridge desktop processors featuring up and coming Zen 5 microarchitecture. The X870E, leading the 800-series, is the successor to the X670E chipset will remain compatible with the existing Socket AM5. This compatibility extends to not just the Granite Ridge processors but also the Ryzen 7000 "Raphael" and refresh Ryzen 8000 Hawk Point series. The X870E chipset distinguishes itself from its predecessors by incorporating USB4 technology, mandating motherboard manufacturers to include 40 Gbps USB4 connectivity.

This specification leads to a 3-chip configuration within the chipset, comprising two Promontory 21 bridge chips and an ASMedia ASM4242 USB4 host controller, with the possibility of incorporating alternative USB4 controllers as approved by AMD's Qualified Vendor List (QVL). With the launch of Ryzen 9000 "Granite Ridge," a new range of AMD X870E motherboards will be introduced. However, these processors will remain compatible with existing 600-series chipset motherboards, pending BIOS updates. 

The Ryzen 9000 Granite Ridge processors maintain a chiplet-based architecture, similar to the Ryzen 7000 "Raphael" series, with the introduction of 4 nm "Zen 5" CCDs and an updated 6 nm client I/O die (cIOD) that enhances the memory controller. AMD suggests DDR5-6400 as the standard memory speed while also encouraging support for DDR5-8000 EXPO profiles by motherboard manufacturers, indicating an FCLK of 2400 MHz with a specific divider. Most Socket AM5 motherboards are equipped with USB BIOS Flashback, allowing for the easy update of BIOS to accommodate Ryzen 9000 series processors on 600-series motherboards. Future expansions of the 800-series chipset family are anticipated to include the X870, B850, and a new entry-level B840 model.
