AMD is reportedly revising its processor naming conventions for the upcoming generation of ultraportable processors, as indicated by a recent publication from ITHome, which cites sources associated with ASUS. This revamped naming framework aims to enhance clarity for consumers, specifically concerning the processors' AI functionalities, class, and grade. The proposed naming system integrates several elements: the presence of an integrated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for AI tasks is denoted by "AI"; the processor's category, indicated by labels such as 'U' for ultra-low power, 'H' for high performance, and 'HX' for extreme performance; and a numerical code that signifies the product's tier.

The introduction of the Ryzen AI 9 HX170 under this naming protocol suggests a shift towards more precise and informative labeling in AMD's product lineup, targeting users who prioritize advanced processing capabilities in compact form factors. This change not only aids consumers in making more informed choices but also aligns with industry trends that increasingly lean towards AI-enhanced computing. The clarity in processor classification and capability can potentially streamline the selection process for users  by providing immediate insights into the processor's intended use and technological complexness. This new scheme emerges amidst conflicting reports, notably a Lenovo product brochure that mentioned a "Ryzen 8050 series." There is speculation about whether the 8050 series represents mainstream processors devoid of AI capabilities. However, this seems improbable as Lenovo incorporates these processors in its high-end ThinkPad T-series laptops.
