Conclusion
The reviewed LCS kits performed very well and handled even an overclocked Core i7 8700K processor at 4.8 GHz with increased voltage (albeit we used a delidded one in this review). The cooling test results were surprisingly good considering the size of the radiator. The RGB lighting looks very nice (it’s bright and the colours are vivid), and you can set it using one of the motherboard manufacturers’ lighting systems. We appreciate the bundled RGB controller for the lighting, which comes in handy if your motherboard doesn’t have any RGB headers. RGB backlight has been provided for the pump enclosure and fans, so we feel that this series will find many buyers in this budget.
As for the wiring, it also looks very nice, without too many cables, and it was relatively easy to manage it properly. It’s also good that the thermal paste is not pre-applied and there is a tube included so you can handle this yourself. The use of +5V ARGB was a good idea. The tubes bend quite well and are long enough (400 mm). Installation isn’t time-consuming. The unit is factory-filled with coolant in a closed-loop, so you just need to install the backplate, the standoff-screws, position the cooler, and secure it. The whole process shouldn’t take longer than ten-fifteen minutes. The braided sleeving also makes the visual aspect nicer.
The Verdict
The Silverstone PERMAFROST PF240 is available at an MSRP of 94.99 GBP. It’s an affordable solution. It does provide good cooling results without sacrificing the silence of the operation. For the price, you get a liquid cooler with RGB functionality (including the fans). The pump design is nice, although the materials that it’s made of don’t look very solid (but this has no impact on how well it works). The radiator looks plain, but that is not an issue. Only a 2-year warranty (with only a few exceptions, like in Korea) is not a selling point either. Still, all things considered, we are sure that this LCS deserves the “Recommended” award as it’s a product with a good value-performance ration.
