Meet the Haswell refresh flagship, this is the Core i7-4790K. Familiar looking alright, processor package size wise. The processor is an Intel engineering sample showing the code-name QG81 ES.
 

Haswell processors are housed on the LGA 1150 socket package, an all too familiar CPU socket as it is the same one as Z87 uses. The good news is that your processor coolers will all fit perfectly on this CPU, the bad news is you'll need to purchase a compatible series 8 or 9 motherboard like Z87 or Z97 for Haswell processors. Both chipset obviously will work fine with the new refresh processors. For the K model Devils Canyon SKUs you do need a very specific BIOS update, please check with your motherboard manufacturer if your board will be supported (or not).
 

For our review we will be pairing the Core i7-4790K processor with a Z97 motherboard, the ASUS Z97 Sabertooth Mark 1. Intel does not manufacture reference motherboards anymore for the consumer market.
