An interesting feature that ASUS delivers with this kit is thie SupremeFX Hi-Fi 5.25" box. In it resides a DAC and headphone amplifier. The DAC is ESS ES9018K2M paired with two Texas Instruments LM4562 op-amps, and a TPA6120A2 headphone amp. It also has a Cirrus Logic analog-to-digital converter for solid recording quality. I do hope you still have a 5.25" bay in your PC chassis of course as these are getting more rare. On board (motherboard) you'll spot a Realtek ALC1150 under the EMI shield paired with two Texas Instruments R45801 amplifiers; one amplifies voltage, and the for the front headphone output. ASUS used multiple Nichicon Gold series audio capacitors.

The mobo has some shields, you can argue whether or not these work, but they sure do look nice. The I/O back panel reveals:

  • 1 x PS/2 keyboard/mouse combo port(s)
  • 2 x LAN (RJ45) port(s)
  • 2 x USB 3.1 (black)Type-C
  • 2 x USB 3.1 (red)Type-A
  • 4 x USB 3.0 (blue)
  • 2 x USB 2.0 (one port can be switched to USB BIOS Flashback)
  • 1 x Optical S/PDIF out
  • 5 x Audio jack(s)
  • 1 x Clear CMOS button(s)
  • 3 x Wi-Fi antenna port(s)
  • 1 x USB BIOS Flashback Button(s)

There is a single PS/2 combo port that can be used for either a keyboard or a mouse, optical SPDIF out port and five gold plated OFC audio jacks.

Check that, 4 x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots. A nice four PCI-Express 3.0 x16 which can be arranged in these slot configurations with graphics cards:

  • 1-way mode - x16 / x0 / x0 / x0 / x0
  • 2-way mode - x16 / x0 / x0 / x16 / x0 or  x16 / x0 / x0 / x8 / x0
  • 3-way mode - x16 / x0 / x16 / x8 or  x8 / x8 / x0 / x8
  • 4-way mode - x8 / x8 / x16 / x8 or  x8 / x8 / x8 / x4

As you can see these are PCI Express Gen 3.0 configurations, that's just more then plenty. Mind you that the Core i7 6950X and 59xxK processors have 40 PCIe Gen 3.0 lanes while the Core i7 68xx / 58xx "only" has 28 PCIe lanes.

The R5E offers eight DIMM slots with support for quad-channel DDR4 memory up 3,333 MHz (OC). You can install a maximum of 128 GB in total. XMP 2.0 is supported, we'll show you this petite setup running at 2,133 and even 3,200 MHz. There are more switches on-board as well, once you decide to go for 2-way or 3-way graphics you can dis/enable certain PCIe slots, though again that is integrated mostly for pro overclockers. I LOVE the new black design.
