Final Words & Conclusion

Final Words & Conclusion

The AS6 micro PC has garnered attention for its noteworthy qualities. It demonstrates commendable performance, a remarkable integrated graphics processor (IGP), and reliable connectivity. However, it falls short in the area of cooling. When the processor is under full load, the temperature quickly reaches 97 degrees Celsius, triggering frequency throttling (thermal throttling) and stabilizing at 80 degrees Celsius. This, in turn, leads to two consequences: decreased performance in multi-threading due to throttled-down clock frequencies and the necessity of efficient cooling, which inevitably generates noise. The unit produces approximately 44 decibels (dBA) of noise at full load, which can be noticeable.

In the BIOS you can select an alternative silent fan profile that brings down the load values towards 40 Decibels (at the cost of a a bit of performance). Nevertheless, under ideal and low load conditions, the AS6 performs admirably, delivering excellent single-threaded performance. Despite being an HX processor, there are no tweaking options available in the BIOS for overclocking, however you can switch from default performance towards a silent mode in cooling.

In terms of specifications, this micro PC is an ideal choice for those seeking a compact and efficient unit. It boasts an integrated GPU design optimized for casual gaming and routine computing tasks. Additionally, it is equipped with 32 GB of DDR5 4800 CL40 MHz RAM, coupled with a swift 500 GB SSD offering read speeds of up to approximately 3500 MB/sec. The AS6 also includes the Wi-Fi 6E AX211 WLAN card, which supports Bluetooth 5.3, ensuring seamless wireless connectivity. For wired connectivity, the LAN controller reinforces the 2.5 Gbps RJ-45 port. Despite the common challenge of heat dissipation faced by PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSDs, the AS6 effectively addresses this issue through its efficient thermal solution. Furthermore, it provides the flexibility to mount an additional NVMe SSD.

Efficient Performance and Allround Connectivity

The mini PC performs efficiently and responsively across a range of tasks, effectively utilizing office applications, facilitating web browsing, and streaming 4K video content. Its versatility is exhibited in its ability to handle everyday activities with ease. The inclusion of WiFi 6E (AX) and Bluetooth 5.3 ensures a stable and efficient wireless connectivity, further contributing to consistent performance. The device is also equipped with an 1TB NVMe SSD, operating in a 3.5 GB/sec performance bracket, which enhances its operational capacity by a good margin. A robust processor bolsters its multi-tasking prowess, demonstrating proficiency in executing diverse tasks. Furthermore, while not matching the performance of dedicated low-end GPUs like the GeForce GTX 1060 or GTX 1650, the integrated GPU competently maintains its effectiveness.

Concluding

The AS6 mini PC, powered by an ASUS VIVO PN53 motherboard distributed by Geekom, delivers impressive performance with its robust CPU, swift storage, and substantial RAM capacity. Unlike its competitors, such as the NUC13, the AS6 offers similar or even superior performance at a more budget-friendly price point, priced at approximately $700 after a discount (see below). This device excels in handling office workloads, minor photo and video editing tasks, and light gaming. Bundled with Windows 11 Pro, the AS6 showcases reliable components and energy efficiency, providing excellent value for its cost. Notably, the AS6 introduces upgradeable features like SODIMM and NVMe storage. The AS6 effortlessly meets everyday computing needs and can handle Full HD games at low to medium graphics settings. However, one potential drawback is the moderate noise level under full load. Additionally, the unit tends to run hot during intensive usage, resulting in performance throttling at around 4350 MHz across all cores. Nevertheless, the AS6 stands out as a highly capable mini PC that excels in low to medium-level everyday tasks. Its compatibility with fast NVMe SSDs and the option to expand with another NVMe SSD and the included 32 GB make it a satisfying choice for users seeking enhanced performance. AM and SSD compatibility further contribute to its appeal.
