Depends on the ram. DDR3 is cheap but it might not be what ends up into that console. Xbox360 has 512mb of gDDR3 ram and PS3 has 256mb of XDR DRAM and 256mb or gDDR3.
it would still be pretty cheap for 8gb. first off i doubt anyone is going with xdr ram in the next wave. second off microsoft, sony, nintendo don't go on newegg and buy a few sticks of ram they get massive volume discounts ofte times direct from the makers. usually no middlemen. 4-8gb would be very plausible for next xbox/playstation the wii-u has 2gb sony and microsoft will no doubt want to get a leg up on nintendo in that regard.

You doubt anyone is going with XDR. Nothing official yet, I dont know much about that (XDR performance increse over something else) so not going to comment more on that. What we also do not know is the gpu and system ram configuration. Is that 8gb total of both ? Does GPU and CPU use same ram ? Sure they get stuff a bit cheaper as they buy a lot of it, but all that is going to put console price up. "A bit more RAM, then a bit more that also and then something else..." You very fast get console price up $100 which should have negative effect on sale numbers.

4 threads per core? I can't tell if that's overkill or not.
It's common for IBM PowerPC processors to have 4 threads per core. If we look at server grade hardware which is what IBM targetted their POWER and PowerPC architectures, the new ones almost all have 4 threads per core. Even Oracle's SPARC have more than 2 threads per core. Only Intel is sticking 2 threads per core in their SMT designs (which is marketed as "HyperThreading"). deltatux

four hardware cores, each divided into four logical cores"
So basically a quad core with hyperthreading and that 8 GB of RAM. Sounds like it will perform like a PC

Devkits usually feature more RAM, so even if this info is true, we may be looking at a less amount of RAM Most previous rumors/leaks have all been pretty sure that the CPU would be AMD as well though

not even close, im sure smartphones will rape them in 6-12months after release

Not only that but if any previous XBOX consoles are any indication, the 8GB thing won't make sense unless they're selling the box for $700 since Microsoft tends to use the graphics memory for the main RAM and for their graphics chip. 8 GB of GDDR5 would probably cost Microsoft a lot of money unless they're willing to take a huge hit on it to drive the prices down. deltatux

True, but it depends on the software design was well. They may use the graphics memory for graphics stuff that needs fast memory, and the DDR3 memory for normal program memory (like usual) and texture memory etc.
Yes, but the XBOX and the XBOX 360 both utilized graphics memory only. So it won't be surprising to see that they do this in their next generation XBOX as well. Though, I do hope their next generation XBOX would get a much higher throughput as their XBOX 360 GDDR3 chips. iirc, the XBOX 360 only had like 22.4 GB/s of bandwidth between the RAM and the rest of the hardware coupled with a eDRAM (where texture is postprocessed and stored) is connected via a 30 GB/s connection. That's not an awful lot of bandwidth even to 2005 standards. deltatux

Wonder what the new controllers are going to look like.

1gb of gddr5 and 2gb of ddr3(2x1gb low latency sticks) to me would be a logical prediction. if the cpu/gpu share ram i can see around 2gb total. xdr while faster would still cost way more in the long run. rambus is pretty bitchy about their ****. you can get ddr3 or maybe even ddr4(4 is coming soon) from anyone willing to make it. if sony and microsoft are smart they will try to sell bundles at or under 350 to compete with wii-u price drops. no more 600+$ ps3 bull**** 😛uke2:

to be honest i hope they are nearly exactly the same but with a "new" appearance. i hope they dont pull a dreamcast or wii-u and start putting screens and **** on them. im tired of spending a arm and a leg for an extra controller that costs next to nothing to make

Actually, I think MS heard from developers about late generation constraints of the low amount of memory. The 360 could have provided much better long term graphics had they not gone with only unified memory architecture. With that in mind, I do think you are likely to see some super fast memory like the 360 has, then a slower large memory pool, with a design that swaps on screen textures and data between the memory, acting somewhat like a hierarchy of cache.

i think it would be hilarious if the ps4 and new xbox both had the exact same hardware just different cases. hard drives might be different but the hardware is looking pretty close so far.

^^Sounds plausible, atleast in the near future if you ask me. hell look at tablets. Manufacture makes hardware then sells to Sony/M$ real cheap and in their choice of case, M$/Sony go ahead and install their OS's on them, then ship...for an ARM and a leg.

I hope they don't change anything. The standard controllers are great already. I feel like if they were going to make them different it would only be for the sake of making them different. What they do need to work on though is quality control and ruggedness. A lot of controllers have slow turn issues, and I find the joysticks wear out after a couple months.

I see what you did there. 🤓

yeah same here i feel like the current batch of official controllers is great. i think ps2 controllers felt a little more sturdy than ps3 ones though. but i use my 360 controller all the time on pc and 360 and i love it its almost perfect for everything but fighting games to me. i like ps3 for fighting games. and i hate arcade stick thingys. only problem with official controllers is price. i can buy a 3rd party model 360 controller for half the price and it not only feels sturdier and more precise but includes light up buttons and integrated cooling fans to keep your hands from sweating with a selector switch for off, low, and high. what i hope sony and microsoft do with their new controllers is keep them exactly the same but give them a fresher appearance. like maybe add a very small battery level meter for wireless controllers or a non-proprietary microphone input hole and micro-usb for charging(ps3 does this already xbox needs it), higher quality passthrough for mics(ps3 shouldve had this in my opinion), better battery life, sturdier construction, and maybe dimmer dial or small button thats out of the way for some lights. last one isn't a must but would please a few people. as far as the shape and layout are concerned i want no changes. any changes made should be done mostly on the inside.

I agree with that.
