Seems like everyone except Microsoft expected this.

good, hopefully microsoft realized the epic fail they made with it
data/avatar/default/avatar19.webp
yet they were pushing metro so hard... wow.

WTF? Why is everyone bashing Metro so hard? 1. It freaking works 2. You don't have to use it except for Start Menu 3. Start Menu from Win8 is superior to Win7 as you have all the old functionality + better arrangement + better lookups from search by typing. But there are lots of people who haven't even tried and are bashing it all the time. Are you paid for doing that?

Fail blog anyone? 😀

Gee, the typical slow initial adoption of a new interface is surprising? Personally I like it. Faster, rock solid...If you use sleep like I do, it's nearly always on the standard desktop. I've enabled quick launch so everything I frequently use is right there...I don't get the anger over it.

Been using Win8 for a week now and love it. Way better than Win7. For those who want the old start menu back install Start8.

And then M$ will release SP1 forcing you to buy Start8 again.

I don't actually know that. Would be nice if they were.

^^ Never paid for windows updates before :P Im gonna wait on this one. hows it it for gaming?

I personally don't use it just because of AERO glass, since it hasn't major improvements, i don't see the reason migrating. And i don't hate Windows 8, like some of you blaming MS, feels like it made your life a lot worse ;D

So stop using Windows at all - it's that easy. It reminds me people who were crying when XP was released, that it has bad Start Menu, and in fact they were too limited to get used to the new, improved version. The same happened when Vista was released with the new Start Menu, and bashing continued. For some reason, when they released Win7 with the very same Start Menu, it was said to be ok. Why? Because people tend to express their opinion concerning something they have no idea about. If someone has to, they can use Launchy, which gives good Start Menu lookups for all Windows versions, including XP. Ok, what's so bad about Win8 that's ok in Win7? ... Dunno? It's faster, more responsive, boots faster, has better tools, like Task Manager, it's got better Bluetooth and USB 3.0 support... better memory management, weighs less, and offers multi-language interface in cheaper versions... but it has to suck, right? People wouldn't be so ignorant to tell something is so bad, while in fact it was better? Oh, I know what - it's got dual interface - old one + new Metro which is evil, because it displays apps without clutter, in really snappy way and no menus overhead, when they're not needed... eghmmm that's not actually that bad... so let's continue. Oh I know - you have to use evil Metro, ha! ... but in fact you really don't have to except for the Start Menu. Which is like from bad bad tablets which are not desktops which makes them bad. Which actually allows you doing the same stuff as one from Win7 + adds tile status + offers superior keyboard & mouse experience, like faster lookup (eg remote desktop - on Win7 you have to type "mstsc", on Win8 it's enough to type "ms") + chosen results appear higher on list, so you type less. You have many new keyboard shortcuts too - Windows key opens Start Menu for clicking and keyboard search except for Control Panel, for that you have Win+W, for files Win+F, settings Win+C, system stuff is easy to open too - just Win+X for all the tools most users need. I was missing some search-related features in Win7 and previous systems, so I was using Launchy (highly recommended great free app, partial Start Menu replacement). However I stopped using it in Win8, as it does everything I needed. This system works, and does it well. I'll be migrating the rest of my computers to Win8 when only I find some free time for that. ---- Small edit regarding gaming-related aspects: Just now Win8 works similar to Win7 in games, you'll get similar frame rate in most of the titles. Some will work a little faster, some a little slower. It appears that loading times improved a bit, but it may be also just a fresh system for me. The difference may appear with later drivers, and with computers with high core count and games using all of them, as Win8 has superior thread scheduler. If the only thing you're looking for is FPS boost, I wouldn't recommend buying Win8 for it. There are other reasons to get it, but just for today FPS boost doesn't seem to justify upgrade cost if you find it expensive, but if you're offered a cheap upgrade, or have Technet / MSDN / MSDNAA subscriptions, I guess it's a non-brainer.

@Ven0m I'm just not fond of Metro. And with so many experts bashing it it kinda puts me off as well.

Why am I NOT surprised. 😉
data/avatar/default/avatar32.webp
Well, that's a surprise... 🙄 While I can understand Microsoft pushing for an unified UI across their platforms that level of persistence is only a merit if the end result is defensible to begin with. From my, admittedly personal, opinion that were never the case with the UI formerly known as Metro. Terrible desktop UI is terrible.

You're entitled to your opinion and everyone else is to theirs! 😉 In response to your points: 1. So does Windows 7! 2. Sure you can bypass the Start menu but what's left is pretty much the same as Windows 7 which hardly justifies upgrading. 3. That is your opinion but personally I find the Start menu clumsy especially the way you have to swipe the window down to close the application. That screams of an interface designed for touchscreens and smartphones and not one well suited to desktops IMO. People aren't just being negative for the sake of it, you know. Windows Me and Vista got similarly lukewarm receptions and, to be honest, I'm not at all surprised that Windows 8 is getting the same. Windows 7 is still in its infancy and really there is no reason for Windows 8 to exist except that Microsoft want to make loads of $$$money$$$. I think that most of the key features such as WDDM 1.2, Start menu aside, could have been added via a Service Pack to Windows 7 (apparently DirectX 11.1 will only work with WDDM 1.2, thus, making it exclusive to Windows 8). If you exclude the Start menu, which is being forced on desktop users rather than offered as an option (which would have eased users from one to the other at their own pace), then what's left is Windows 7 Part 2 IMO. I'm not seeing enough elsewhere to justify the upgrade and I positively hate the Start menu as it's clunky, clumsy, garish and extremely corporate bland. I'll be delaying upgrading for as long as possible.

I've seen benchmarks that show Windows 8 is slightly better than 7 for multi-tasking and stuff but games performance is (unsurprisingly) either the same or marginally slower than 7. There is no real reason to upgrade to 8 for gaming until DirectX 11.1 gets released and a game is released that uses it. However, if it's anything like DirectX 10.1 then this incremental update will be used by one or two games at most before as Windows 8 users will be in a minority compared with Windows Vista/7 users so most developers will likely not bother with it.

So the fact that the whole OS was designed for a tablet/smartphone is not enough of a reason? Big square icons, swiping, can't disable metro. control panel is a mess...and you ask why? There was a video of a guy who installed 8 on a PC and got his grandfather to try and work on it. He was used to 7 and couldn't find what he was looking for. Oh and I've tried 8 and it blows. I don't think I should use third party software to fix the OS. M$ should have given people a CHOICE of how they want it to look and perform. Win7 + rocket dock is a winner for me.

Microsoft won't learn, they'll push this as hard as they can with literally billions in advertising. Then when it miserably fails in the end and it's time for Windows 9 they'll declare that Win 8 was the innovation of the century which pushed the limits of creativity and should be honoured with awards. It doesn't matter how hard it fails, MS will call it success. I'll wait until Windows 9 thanks. If it's like Win 8 then I'll wait until Win 10... I'll repeat the cycle as many times as necessary until MS drop the bull****. If they don't then I'll just say **** it and switch to Arch Linux.
