🙄 Hopefully I will be given the choice to boot straight into the Start Screen.

Ok, but how about the 100% disc usage issue?

What issue?That's one I haven't seen.

I'd be shocked if they didn't, its the 1st option I'll be changing (I prefer the start screen). They should make it like the browser choice popup IMO, after the update is applied at the very next boot it should do a popup asking which you want as the default. -- I wish they'd spend some time making things like an in built Oblytile thing so we can customise desktop tiles without a 3rd party program.

It has been confirmed by several sources now that Microsoft is making a 360 with an upcoming Windows 8.1 update. Windows at default will boot into desktop mode. The reason for the reversal is to impro... Windows 8.1 Update 1 boots in to desktop mode as default
I think that should be "making a 180" because if you do a 360 then you end up right back where you started! 😉 Of course, Microsoft do make (Xbox) 360s but I don't think that is what you meant... :P

That struck me as well lol.

With it being called Boots to desktop "As Default" I would imagine that means you could change default to being something else - otherwise it would just be "Windows 8.1 boots to desktop"

Thanks for clearing that up

Man you have to turn OFF WIndows BackUP Schedule in Task Scheduler located in Control Panel / System & Security in Admin Tools For me that works 🙂

Would it not have made more sense, to add the choice to boot directly to desktop or start screen during setup in the first place? At least their slowly changing things based on user feedback. Slowly.

Now im going to skip Windows 8 sorry Microsoft its your fault ! no candy no fun

Me too 🙂 But anyway, I dont see how going forward is making 180 (or 360, what ever). We already know that MS is bringing Metro apps to desktop in a year, and this is just a small step towards that. That will be great. Even now its better than not being able to run mobile apps in PC at all. And the performance, size, energy consumption, startup, etc requirements from mobile to PCs are very welcome to improve overall quality of everything.

Yep
There is a checkbox currently in 8.1 that lets you automatically boot to desktop. By-default however, this isn't checked (but it's literally a simple checkbox away from being enabled). I don't know if there's something I'm missing or misinterpreting, but how is this news or exciting? I guess if anything, this might improve the feedback from people who harshly criticize Windows 8 without messing with settings or sitting down to actually use it for more than a few minutes.
Its not exciting news. But for many MS haters its an easy catch to spam these "MS is turning around" claims to try to get some clicks. But something very funny happened just a few days ago. Apple made a new record that was hyped everywhere BUT investors are smarter than journalists so Apple's market value dropped about 50 billion in one night and even some fanboys in WSJ and the press alike started to have some serious doubts about the company. Its getting veeery interesting.

It's just because MS were adamant that Metro/Modern UI was the new Windows, Start button was gone etc, and now they're backtracking just about every feature they forced on us

At-least it save me a couple of sec's clicking the option to do it my self.

Now fix the control panel & PC settings and I'll be very happy with 8.1.

8.1 is spot on for me, I rarely venture into Metro other than when Im bored, StartisBack installed, all hot corners disabled, its a faster prettier Windows 7 with more features and under the hood improvements

True that but I would still prefer that both are full featured and neither user has to visit the other side's version. CP is so awkward for tablet folks and PC S for us.

Yea they didn't do a very good job of merging them together to allow control of everything from either side For PC users at least, once you've set up the Metro side, you can more or less forget its even there
