4k on a 24 inch screen is 183 PPI. 24 inches isn't particularly big, and it still only manages 183 PPI. We know from smartphones that people can still discern 200PPI from 300 and 300 from 400PPI at a distance of a foot. I don't use a monitor much more than 2 feet away; I don't know about you. If people can tell the difference in an image on a screen a sixth the size at half the distance, I'm not sure why you feel 4k is "good enough" at 24 inches. EDIT: For clarification, your suggestion of 1440p on 27 inch screens is roughly equivalent to a 420x360 screen on a 5 inch phone. Such a resolution would be totally unacceptable.
Tbh, just ranting, I could be wrong. Seen 40-48" 4k TVs but not a 4k monitor. My rough logic (faulty or not) from a practical standpoint is that since 1440p 27" screens are perfectly acceptable (ppi-wise) at 18-24" distance and seem adequate to flesh out details minute enough for one to squint, how much more visual impact is 4k to have over that with screens near same size (or less). This is not viewing to make out different PPI at 1' which may be hugely different at 2'. Personally I cant make out the difference between 300ppi and 400ppi phones (ie, S3 and S4 phones) in normal use, but if told what to look for and on close examination I might (or not). But re a 5" phone w/420x360 screen (assuming your calculations are proper), yes, I would find that unacceptable. However there may be other factors at play which may make phone screens vs large monitors not a fair comparison, ie, viewing distance, brightness, rendering and LCD tech differences between monitors and phones vary considerably. Distance of course the most crucial factor, a blueray movie @ 1920x1080 on a 60" TV looks incredibly detailed to my eyes (from about 15-18') that I cant imagine even 4k improving on that (unless I move up to 3' away?). Lets not forget there are 4k 15" laptops in the market. FFS where do you draw the line?? Can anyone resolve individual pixels on a 28" 4k screen let alone a 15" one at 18" away? So how much of that is marketing vs practical need? What next, 4k 5" phones?

What you are saying is understandable. Resolution is a subjective preference. If someone can discern the difference in resolution and actually appreciates the difference, bragging rights just for the sake of bragging does not count, then the product fills a practical desire for that individual. If someone cannot discern the difference and resolution was a factor in the purchase of it... Fool and his money...

I think we are still around 15 months away minimum from a single card solution for 4k with good framerates (60) at a decent mid-range price of around £500. Not quite there just yet.

I think civilization is fine at any resolution, I sometimes play Civ 1 on my 8 years old media player 320x240. And Dwarf Fortress is fine at variety of resolutions too 🙂 I think while manufacturing defectless 4k may come bit expensive, manufacturers are overlooking 1440p which is now in all round sweet spot. Price is good, PC to monitor connectivity allows for 144Hz, this resolution is OK for monitors and TVs alike. And PC hardware can drive it just fine. And even equipped with passive 3D which cuts resolution in half, per eye resolution is very good. But I can only dream about having any passive 3D monitor with 144Hz. Since they are not made even at 1080p. Well, I at least hope, HMDs next year will not screw up.
