Impressive for a gamepad

Not bad at all. Hopefully it's not more than $80 though.

Indeed it is. Valve have done a great job with the controller.

I mean it's still not as accurate as a mouse, but it's decent. For it's intended purpose it looks like it works quite well. Still, if you played CS:GO on this you would probably get raped. Took him quite some time to aim.

I don't see how anyone could just know for sure that it will never be as accurate as a mouse as that could depend on the player. But I do wonder how long that player had to take to adjust to the controller.

Mouse is still no1 for aiming/fps games, you cant replace that with a thumb,. When I play such games with a joypad I feel like im invalid lol

but isn't the hole point of the steam box, to have it on your living room? I mean the whole reason for the controller is to also push Big Picture. I don't see this as a replacement to keyboard and mouse, I mean its a controller. It's supposed to replace OTHER controllers, not keyboard and mouse... And if aiming is better/faster/snappier than on this, then it's game on. what I'm worried about is the longevity of the rubber pad, as we all know it fades over time. And with constrant brushing against it since it's touchpad, I wonder how well it's going to hold up.

the controller is impressive when compare to other controller (which i never doubt). However, there are games that just doesn't work well with a controller.

Well it says this on the steam website
We realized early on that our goals required a new kind of input technology — one that could bridge the gap from the desk to the living room without compromises
Steam gamers, who are used to the input associated with PCs, will appreciate that the Steam Controller’s resolution approaches that of a desktop mouse. Whole genres of games that were previously only playable with a keyboard and mouse are now accessible from the sofa. RTS games. Casual, cursor-driven games

Casual cursor games, and couch being keywords. Like in the demonstration video, it shows portal 2 and civ v as game demos. they're both casual cursor games, and unlike portal 2, civ v isn't playable with a controller afaik. Steam/Valve would never make the mistake of advertising this as something that could replace mouse/kb combo in games like csgo or tf2. especially dota 2, this would be completely useless for. They're pushing this for big picture, which the whole point behind it is giving steam a console interface.

It probably is pretty good for PC made games that would normally rely on a mouse/keyboard (especially first person shooters). I wonder how it'd compare with the xbox 360 controller for everything else though.

In the video it specifically mentions when using both trackpads the controller can be used for games that need precise mouse movements and large distances on the screen. nothing casual about that imo. Though it seems to work quite well for shooters and imo it should be a great addition for games that dont support mouse and keyboard like dragons age and mass effect. They never mentioned it not to be for RTS games like DOTA2 and they are open to any game you would like to see. Casual, cursor-driven games isnt the keyword, they named 2 genres. people want to see dota2 played with it, so im looking forward to the next video.

Yes, precise movements. but nowhere do they say it's better than keyboard/mouse, anyone who says that's what they claim is wrong :P What they're going for, is saying it's more precise than standard method for controllers i.e. thumbsticks. they have also said this in articles and such. The whole point of this controller is to go along with the steambox so you can play in your living room on Big Picture while having a controller that is better than others. Also DOTA 2 isn't RTS, it's MOBA. and yes, you are correct, they said it's open to pretty much any game. if you want to play a game with this controller, it'll do an amazing job (compared to other controllers). and what they meant with casual is calm shooter games like portal 2. Not overly intense games where speed and precision just isn't there with the controller, like CS:GO. Like I've said (and so has valve) this is a better alternative to the current controllers out there i.e. more "precise". but nowhere have they said, it's a match or better than keyboard.

i concur, any more than that will make it irrelevant

I'm gonna have to start using a controller, I got a 360 one but it's no use for the combat games I like, this steam one will be no use either, I'm looking at this one > http://www.amazon.co.uk/Street-Fighter-Vs-Tekken-Fight/dp/B006ZTHGDE/ref=sr_1_5?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1381559846&sr=1-5&keywords=madcatz+fightpad :)
Honestly, you're better off investing in a decent fight stick if you take that sort of game even semi-seriously. They can be a little pricy depending on what you go for, but they're well worth it. That and they tend to look badass, so you've a little eye candy for your gaming setup.

Yes, I've now two combat games that don't like the kb, and Injustice is just round the corner too. I gotta do something, even navigating with kb round the menus in some of the combat games warrants a rage quit at times. I'll have to check the sticks out but I'm not ever at a table, I sit upright or against a wall(with pillows lol) so yeah, fightpad seems best. the steam controller was impressive too of course, if you go for that.

I`d like to see him using it on grid 2

A lot of fight sticks are comfortable to use while resting on your knees. Check out some tournament matches, you'll see a lot of people sat like that. Just takes a little getting used too.

While I'm impressed by the little I've seen, I still have major concerns. They stated it'd make strategy games playable with a pad, and then showcased a TBS of all things. I really don't think this will hold up in an RTS.
