No need to charge since like all big coporations, they sell your data, what you view, what you do on the internet. Pretty much like Android, iOS. There is nothing for free like the say says!
H83:

This^^ Why sell a license everytime a new Windows is released when they can sell our data on a daily/weekly/monthly basis...
@anticupidon is there any basis for these claims? investigative articles etc. Don't think I've seen any ads on Windows recently. Or you guys mean telemetry?

I remember they tried to push for adds in one of their updates

I really hope that from 24 (or at least 30) we can freely upgrade from W10 to W11 without deleting all the data.

One can wonder why a multi-billion would "give, offer" a new OS for free. And before someone asks, Linux is free, one pays with donations (nobody's forcing you), time and your willingness to learn. Regarding Microsoft, the adagio "Never trust the Greeks, even when they bring presents" just fits. Leaving the animosity aside, for normal users, it's a great opportunity, and hope that it will be better. As usual, Let's wait and see.
I don't think Windows has been their main source of profit since the early 2000s. MS makes all their money in enterprise, services, Office, and Windows Store (or so they'd like it to be). MS is veeery slowly losing the battle to alternative OSes so they're trying to maintain their stronghold. This is to keep people within their ecosystem.

The moment I manage to make World of Tank run in Linux (Manjaro) windows are dead to me. I play games and using Manjaro for years now for everything except WOT :/ Vulkan games like X4 Foundations also run 20% faster on same machine compared to windows!!!!

Still think windows 7 is better, dx11 works well, no forced windows updates. I have windows 10 now but dx12 runs like crap in every single game its enabled in keeping waiting as the years go by and have to reinstall windows every month cause windows force updates.

I would have thought it would be for free. With Microsoft pushing older and latest Xbox games to PC it would be counter productive to charge gamers to actually pay to have a OS to play these games.

I do like indocations. "Well, indocations are strong that the upgrade to Windows 11 will be free even for the older operating systems."

ZzzzZzzz. People have been saying the same shizz for over 20 years. Over those 20 years, Windows has been pretty good to me for not a lot of cash.

say what you want about the OS, but Microsoft clearly delivered the best E3 presentation. (sony verdict is still out. they will have their thing in July AFAIK). They still pump money into age of empires 2, they put $75,000 into hidden cup 4 ($15,000 came from the community.) they even supported captureage. A tool to watch (live) aoe2 games. Microsoft's xbox division is doing amazing work IMHO. They hired the correct people.

I could care less what MS does on Xbox if the game doesnt come to PC. Infact Sony has opened up some of their games to PC and I honestly hope the rumours of them doing a deal with EPIC to have Sony games on PC is true. Because outside of Forza, I dont give a rats ass what Xbox has to offer. Hell I havent owned a console since 2013.

If you are sticking to an ancient version of Win10 with no updates, it could very well affect the DX12 performance. Great many older dx12 games were really dx11 games, though, with dx12 just slapped on top of the dx11 for marketing purposes.

I never went that down path with the earlier upgrades. So how does this work. let's say I have a key for w10 and upgrade to w11. How do I go about reinstalling the OS? first w10 the online upgrade again or how.
I had a windows 7 key unused and forgotten till i found it and used it on a friends pc , where i installed windows 10 directly with no issues what so ever windows took the key no problem and validated the setup . So if they change nothing i bet it will be the same deal.

NesteaZen:

No I meant once I installed w11, then needed to reinstall. guess I'll google around and see what's up. if any findings, will post, but the question's still open.
It depend on your key type. If your key is linked to your account or if it is linked to your hardware: - If linked to your account, just install and log your account and it is done. - If linked to your hardware and if it is like Windows 10 you have to update and enter your old Key or use a tool to "convert" your key and install your W11 with the key. Most key are now linked to account if you come from W7 or latter.

Now, if we could just purchase an actual XBox Series X for $499, in stock......... I have a XBox One X so no, I am not paying scalping prices for a Series X.

I would rather Sony sticks with Steam, because the games they release is far more likely to work in my Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS install the through Lutris and Epic. (Or the Heroic Games Launcher.)

The reason that Microsoft is so willing to hand you a "free" license is that you are actually testing their updates for their Enterprise customers, so that issues are found in the large Home and Professional user base before they are unleashed upon their paying Enterprise customers. So you are sort of a permanent Beta tester/coal miner's canary for their Enterprise customers and as such the pay you with a free license. It is that simple.
