Stalin was on the side of Germany when invading Poland, but people of USSR won WW2 together with people of Britain, USA and Europe and with huge help of their governments. But as I take it now "propaganda" of those countries does not mention USSR people at all. As for Eastern Europe under soviet regime I suspect it was much more lightweight comparing to oppression, violence and hunger inside USSR. Since I was born and raised in USSR I have that feeling.

Yes, you are correct that both sides have used propaganda to prop up their contributions higher. For example, after WW2 a study was conducted in France, and it asked who contributed the most for winning WW2. The vast majority of French said it was the USSR. A similar study was done in France in the early 2000's but by then most people said it was the USA. On a similar note, the contributions of Lend Lease to the USSR have been completely ignored by the USSR. Without this, there is a strong possibility that the USSR could not have resisted both Nazi invasions, while relocating their factories. Regarding the level of oppression, it varies with each country. But countries like Poland and Ukraine had it very bad.

There almost never is a "good guys" in the real world. One side is more advantageous to support than the other.

But still not the level of USSR - I mean Poland of course, since Ukraine shared the fate of other people in USSR before WW2. I was born in 1969, and since I remember myself all people in USSR were trying to get goods from other soviet countries (and democratic ones, ofc), were trying to get to other soviet countries - because of quality, because of proximity of Western Europe.
