There's a tool out that will let you bypass CPU feature checks.

Awww, I still have my AMD Athlon 64 3500 + box in the pile of boxes that I use to elevate my left rear surround speaker, brings back memories. ๐Ÿ˜€

My thoughts exactly.

I researched it a few weeks ago. You have to go all the way back to the Pentium Pro days (max 200mhz) to reach a point where windows 7 refuses to run from missing instructions.

Hmm .. why does Windows support hardware that are as good as unusable today?

Well, I doubt anyone would try to run windows 7 on a 160mhz pentium 2, but its just that its got enough of the right instructions to run it. Microsoft say 1ghz for the cpu in W7, doesn't mean it can't be run below it, but it will get to the point where it's just so slow you may as well try to use a painting as a computer.

Don't worry about it! Some newer motherboards don't even allow you to install Windows XP. ๐Ÿ˜‰

No. Well, kind of. I was able to run Windows 8 on a Pentium III for a while, but it would crash on and off. I'm assuming it's the same for 8.1. If I remember right, it has a lot to do with windows components (I believe Netframework was one of them) wanting SSE2. When it did run I felt it was pretty snappy. If you want older rigs to run modern OS then Linux is your better bet. Or using older Windows versions that were released around the time of the hardware in question.

8.1 runs just fine on the Turion64 ML-34 single core CPU in my 2005 vintage laptop. I can't see why a newer dual core chip would be incompatible. I see in the article that it only applies to the 64 bit version of Windows 8.1. I'm using the 32 bit flavor since the previous OS on the machine was XP Pro 32 bit and I figured 32 bits would be faster on an old CPU.

I'm considering putting Win8.1 on the Pentium-D 915 system I have here... It's running Vista right now.

Until they resolve the messed up mice behavoir in games not using rawinput... I don't support Windows 8.1 either. Rather then just a new menu, they actually BROKE something this time that was fine for over a decade.

Will probably run smoother then Vista ๐Ÿค“

I've got a Pentium 4 Northwood that can run 7, but doesn't have the instruction sets for 8 / 8.1

Ubuntu LiveDVD runs smoother than Vista does....

Then I won't even try. I've already run Ubuntu LiveDVD on it....and that runs reasonably well. I just hate Ubuntu and Vista runs like crap...

I ended up putting XP on mine, the GPU is an ancient 32mb ATI RAGE thing and there are no drivers for anything newer, actually there don't even seem to be drivers for XP, but the default Windows ones work ok, so I`ve just left it at that for now I tried 98se, ME, 2000, XP, 7, Ubuntu 9>12, Linuxmint, and the only one that is not a slideshow is XP and 2000

What's the ram on your older system anyway? That's the big thing I've noticed when retro-fitting older rigs with more modern software. They'll really run almost anything if you have the ram, and maybe also a more modern video card (no idea what you have in that thing).

Get another Linux distro. Fedora, mint, etc.

You guys would be surprised what a modern GPU, even on PCI can do on older systems.
