Scum (not that I want the device but..)

super easy solution against scalping and one that the manufacturers will love : "warranty is only valid for the original 1st buyer" before you scream "no !" 1) you can't have everything for nothing, got to make a choice at some point, if scalping becomes prevalent something will have to be done 2) several companies already do it, if not publicly (sometimes they do in text, even against your local laws), two examples, cars and expensive road/mountain bikes they might say they don't but they will absolutely refuse any warranty work if you're not the original buyer, I've seen it many times over the years, very easy for them to create an explanation to refuse it

Don't need to touch warranty laws. All a government needs to do is ban the sale of products above official retail price for all new products within first 3yrs of release. On top of that, they could add that sellers of new retail products must have a business account and be a registered company (e.g. Ltd). Done..

For me the biggest draw is just the portability, if I take my laptop out, to play a lot of games I'll also need to bring an Xbox controller as a trackpad fckn sucks for most games. So basically I won't even consider brining a laptop for any trip under 2 hours (I commute about 1.5 hours if I need to go into work). My switch did do this but having to buy every indy game 1 year later and at a higher price point is the pain in the ass and then be restricted to no mods or anything.

I newer understood such small screens, have never played anything on my phone either. I have a 34" monitor, and I am starting to feel it is small..? 😀
Same here, but then again I'm not really the travelling/commuting person, since I guess these types of devices target that audience. As for scalpers, I think Rule 34 needs to be rewritten as in if it exists, there are scalpers of it o_O

Who is desperate enough to own this to pay scalper prices like that? Unlike GPUs, this isn't a potential money-maker.
cryohellinc:

I literally see no point in this device.

That's like asking what is the point of the Nintendo Switch; the Deck is just a competitor that plays PC games. There is a market for controller add-ons to phones/phablets (or small tablets) to use something like Steam Link and play AAA titles on a handheld device. This is a nice step beyond that. Laptops aren't anywhere near as portable. Laptops aren't handheld. Laptops don't have built-in ergonomic controls (a keyboard isn't enough and trackpads are crap for gaming). You're basically asking "why would I choose a candy bar when I could have a cake?". Not everyone wants cake. Not everyone is hungry enough for a cake. Not everyone can comfortably digest cake. To me, the more important question is: why would you game on a laptop? It's in this awkward middle-ground of not being very portable, not ergonomic, and not very powerful. If you're not playing a keyboard-only game, you can't really comfortably keep/balance a laptop on your lap while you use an external input device, while also negating the portability. If you need external input devices and a desk, you might as well play games on a desktop, where you won't suffer from thermal throttling and obnoxiously loud fans. The argument "I don't have enough space" isn't a valid argument anymore when you consider there are mini PCs with potent gaming potential. And don't get me started on the beefy gaming laptops with the giant power bricks (or two...).

better portability, laptops are still larger and more bulky, no controller included with a laptop, no gyro controls included, It's also cheaper than a decent gaming laptop unless you want to try and game on a chrome book, it will probably (hopefully) have less heat, laptops get uncomfortably hot most of the time, Amazing emulation potential (wii, wii u, switch emulation with already built in gyro controls). Here is a good review of a similar device with Intel graphics and this thing can run Cyberpunk! [youtube=llZqWKxjMz8] lets hope Valve have better build quality though :/ He explains why these products have a place in the market and now with Valve getting behind them it could bring great competition also not to forget but if Valve is successful this will vastly improve Linux gaming compatibility. Giving us Windows users another alternative OS to use. If its not for you then fine but don't hate on others who have a reason for themselves.

Undying:

I understand that if it was unique but there are literally many devices like the deck already in the market.
True there are many devices like the deck, however they are normally crowdfunded chinese machines with poor build quality, insane prices, and overall poor support. Valve is not a chinese company, this is why the deck has a lot more potential than the other devices.

Lol at the clowns saying i dont seen the point of this device.
https://forums.guru3d.com/data/avatars/m/80/80129.jpg
Idk lol - this device isn't for me but I don't get the people saying it's useless or has no purpose. Like you guys seriously can't wrap your head around a gameboy?

Meh!

Would be nice probably will never happen, have your met the law makers? there no better the politics, Manufactures can easily see what is sold, what there serial number is and in case of consoles and handheld devices like this, they can easily black list the device is it was found to be sold 2nd time there by bricking the device, which would stop people from buying from scalapers. among so many other opitons then can do. cause manfacturer can easily regestat any item be sold is checked agains data of "sold" and it it found be sold again they must take down or risk no longer be able to sell said device. which would screw all the sellers trying to scalp on amazon/newegg/walmart and allther other place that allow people to sell stuff, ebay too, but i dont see it happen to many thing would have to happen for such things to happen. As for deck I see it as another peice hardware from steam that failed. Steambox failed, Steam controller Failed, This will fail too. it will still be bought though

still hoping that one day scalping gets made illegal, this is still affecting GPUs/consoles and so many tech devices right now we need a government body to step in and take charge. Companies don;t seem to care, i know Valve has some measures in place but clearly there is only so much some companies can do before it most likely becomes a detriment to the consumer. does confuse me how some of this stuff is selling however, like are there that many people with that much money to throw around? Maybe I need a better job xD a bit over MSRP I can get but when its almost 10 times it's insane
https://forums.guru3d.com/data/avatars/m/270/270017.jpg
In the USA this is called PRICE FIXING, commonly occurred at gas stations during state of emergency, etc. Yes, it's illegal. You can report it to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission).

Its just business

Valve should just stick to software (though they barely do that nowadays, anyway). Their hardware, Index aside, always seems to end up the same. Lots of hype, Lots of interest, constantly out of stock, and suddenly discontinued. Steam Link lasted 3 years, Steam Controller made it 4..... I would honestly kind of hate to see the Index meet the same fate... but it also wouldn't surprise me in the least.

Essentially a Switch that plays PC video games... and also, well Emulators... portable Snes, heck yes.
