I mean if it locked chip which cant overclock for the non X version then there is no point buying the higher number in the range. The price for non X might be better for those using mainstream setup.
AMD is not locking CPUs so far , is part of their marketing ..... If they lock now the non x models they are going to get an angry mob 😛

Let's hope that the 65W TDP in not another "Intel move" by them, after they pull an Intel with the space heater 7950X. TDP can be misleading as Intel taught us and AMD is starting to look more and more like them so I will wait for the independent test.

i mean the 1700 was a better deal than the 1700x and the 1800x it was even overclocking only 100 ~200 mhz less or it was matching em ...silicon lottery really ... 1600 vs 1600x too ....3600 vs 3600x vs 3600xt 3700x vs 3800x ...... 5600 vs 5600x 5700x vs 5800x ..... ALL of those the lower binned cpus where always better value the performance you loose was miniscule or ...0 ... the main idea is better sell the same chiplets on lower price and lower profit than having em stockpiled on a warehouse unsold , i seriously doubt there are enough lower bins with such a small difference to go around so they have to use the normal bins 😛 edit: i jumped to a ryzen 5800x and considring my humble ryzen 1600 was still hitting the 75 fps where i want no problem i have a feeling that 5800x will stay with me for 4-5 years at least most likely i will be looking to either buy a used 5950x or update to am6 the update to am6 or what ever intel has at the time or dropping in a 5950 would very much depend how benefitial the update will be ... for example i believe even today if there was an i7 2900k that was 8 core used for say ...100 bucks would have been a great budget option for people to update their 2500k and 2600k 😛
I did almost the same and jumped from 1700 to 5800x, the 1700 at 3700Mhz allcore was actually plenty good for a lot of games. When locked at 1440p 165hz most of my games either hit the vsync wall or is GPU limited by a 6900xt. The 5800x was simply more then good enough for my setup and I prefer 100-165 fps with as much details as possible.

my 65W on the 12 core part compared to 170 on the X model will likely see a sizable loss in performance over the 7700X
Not necessarily. The 7950X dropped noticeable performance, under full multi-core load, at 65W. Barely anything at 105W though. So it may well be that dropping 4 cores will fix that too, just looking at the advertised clocks seem a good enough indication IMO.
