An engineer uses his free time to give a 22 year old game a cutting-edge feature FOR FREE, so a random guy comes and say "not impressed". WTF?

The ignorance and lack of appreciation / understanding for what is going on in Q2VKPT is astounding.

I guess this is one way to show the tech in itโ€™s full glory, except not... because the rest of the game is still in โ€˜97. Just shows that the performance hit of ray tracing needs a heck of a lot of work. Itโ€™s supposed to be a cheap and easy way to improve lighting, not a pathway to 50% fps. ๐Ÿ˜•

According to what you just said, this does exactly what you asked.
Cheap, as in not expensive, performance wise... (not the case yet) and easy, meaning easy to implement (maybe the case, but still need to put in plenty of work to make it look good).

"except not... because the rest of the game is still in โ€˜97" I think you missed this part of the comment lol.

All I was saying is not a great example of ray tracing as the rest of the game is not realistic looking. Your also now just agreeing with me that ray tracing is expensive. I give up. ๐Ÿ˜‰

It will be nice to play through Q2 again with RT feature and get a nice throwback just for kix.

BlackZero:

You said it wasn't meant to be expensive, not me. So, now we agree. See, I can play this game too. ๐Ÿ˜€
Touchรฉ sir, lets agree to agree then. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

I don't get it. Why mess about with RT on an old game like QII. Makes no sense. Maybe we'll get MDK next.
I *think* it's because it is open sourced, and well understood and documented and well known.

I will have to see it in motion with my own eyes to really judge it. The early video shown before this really had issues cleaning up the noise of the path tracing. Which is my biggest issue with RT aside from the huge waste of performance. Temporal artifacts and aliasing.

If you don't know why they chose this game for RTX showcase ray tracing - you probably shouldn't be here.
