Actually.... if one can look at it unbiasedly: I'm not supporting hack attempts, but as demands go, they seem reasonable and logical. With all the ongoing DCH driver issues in windows and the telemetry of the drivers, open source is a great idea. The linux community would applaud a move that would also be part of the GNU which nvidia has cleverly dodged so far. on the LHR, well, that is also a reasonable request. Who wants expensive hardware gimped for that agenda. They didn't demand bitcoin payments from one of the largest companies in the world, they didn't target financial documents, internal payroll, or fiduciary financials, they didn't threaten anything other than open source and lift the LHR? Nvidia, you should be grateful that the scope of this hack remained this reasonable. Again, just speaking from a more unbiased point of view....

If they catch the guy, have him fight in Ukraine.

Do companies still put all source code for specific features on just one or two servers? I'd expect more interest from Nvidia to contain the hackers leaks unless the stolen code represents minimal IP exposure. Also, not sure it would be of use to any company since only one company is using this specific process and would be pretty easy to identify if used by other individuals/companies.

At least it happened before new GPU gen and not after, so hopefully they'll still ship with a somewhat effective mining throttle.

I dont expect NVidia to cave in at all otherwise it sets a precedent hacking them can force change. They will need to take a fall over this, then make security stronger + long winded to get through - easier to catch in time. I would make the route through change on the fly with AI control and result in fake documents, which can also be AI generated to look credible. All the while, every part of the hack attempt would be logged and analysed, making it easier to reveal those responsible and future security better. I expect those responsible will be traced and handled seriously, NVidia dont lack ability.

The fact they are threatening Nvidia to make Nvidia to release a LHR driver suggests the hackers can't do it themselves. Not surprising as the only way to release that would be to get the private key used to encript drivers which will be particularly well hidden.

open source is a great idea
the common ignorant myth of open source that won't die is that it will improve the quality of code to a measurable degree. It doesn't and never has, open source is where code goes to die.

Fonzie was a loser who lived as a lodger with a family who had an underage teen-age daughter who he used to hit on and flirt with. And yet, the owner of nvidia thinks he can wear a leather jacket and be 'cool' ?
seriously, you should get a life. and may eventually wanna start thinking of posting comments that make sense for a change

So, how will nvidia weaponise this breach as to increase their GPU prices even more and to then play the "protect the consumer" card? lol

open source for there drivers hahah. This all PR stunt being made by the hackers. Nvidia will not do any of that

LOL Misplaced illogical comebacks are always a delight to read, but let us not fall into reductio ad absurdum and false equivocation. They ARE being pretentious with those product names. I can't wait to see them name a chipset 'Fonzie' after the owners pretence of wearing leather Jackets to look 'cool', even though Fonzie was a joke, in that he thought he was cool, but everyone else did not and the audience certainly did not. Fonzie was a loser who lived as a lodger with a family who had an underage teen-age daughter who he used to hit on and flirt with. And yet, the owner of nvidia thinks he can wear a leather jacket and be 'cool' ? c'mon...
Could this guy /r/neckbeard any harder??

Offer a big payday and immunity to rat out the whole group. It's really that easy.

Is not true in context of display drivers. Of course quality would improve when it's easier for users to bisect an issue to a faulty commit, among other things. But it's not in Nvidia's DNA, no need to conjecture about it. And not even AMD and Intel do this on Windows, even though Linux open-source drivers for their hardware often are better.

As you can imagine it's pretty hard to get into the news the last week or so but nVidia sure did manage it. I too think this will just give nVidia more publicity and especially interest in future products. Their new flagship A102 looks about 75% more powerful than GA102. So not quite double 3090 performance but with those stats it'll be between 50 and 100%. It also looks like the A103 is the 4080 and that's very close to 3090 stats.

lol, it seems like Lapsus got hacked themselves and got ransomwared. That likely means Nvidia knows who they are already...
