Edge and Internet Explorer have also been the only browsers to have 1080p at Netflix (which I guess is extremely more popular than 4k), so I don't get why people suddenly are throwing a fuzz about Edge being required for 4k No browser supports 5.1 audio either.
I thought Chrome supported 1080p for a while now? But yeah, I really wish Netflix would have better surround sound support. I would maybe consider a subscription if they offered that. Even Youtube should start promoting that. Instead, they focus on 3D videos which is more tedious than cool.

Chrome is 720p. I dont care about EDGE needing to be used for 4k, Its the cpu part. I was hoping to use an old Phenom X6 1055t with a gtx 950 for 4k Netflix in my HTPC. A kabby lake i3 setup would cost alot with having to buy a gtx 950 as well since I would need a board, ram, and the cpu. Call me old fashioned, but I dont like using IGP unless its mini itx HTPC or smaller PC.

I don't watch Netflix on my browser. Why would I do that when I have a 50" 4K TV? I watch Netflix in 4K already on my TV.

Some prefer using their HTPC. I still do. Its why I didnt buy a smart TV. But I havent bought a 4k tv as I felt it wasn not worth it yet. Im more wanting a cheap Android box that can do netflix 4k and a simple 4k tv.

It will be easier to just buy a PS4 pro or an Xbox 360 s to do netflix at 4K.

Limiting to just Edge is fine as video quality on Chrome sucks to be quite frank. What I'm not down with is only support for 7th Gen CPU's. What obvious omission does my 2500k Sandy Bridge not have? Xbox One S will do just fine for me.

But will need Â*Edge and a Kaby Lake processor.Â*Netflix will make streaming of movies and series in Ultra HD / 4K available on Windows 10. But you are going to need a computer with a KabyÂ*Lake CPU, ... Netflix brings 4K / Ultra HD streaming to Windows 10
kaby lake only? that is artificial lock if i ever heard of one.. Most rendering is done on gpu and most are 4k/2.2hdcp compliant too. so there zero reason to lock it to kaby lake. Are they trying to tell me my 6700k is not capable?? rofl please this nothing more software lock nothing more. Then again I dont care as I dont watch Netflix on my PC as i wont install silverlight. maybe if they swtich to HTML5 I would but I will remain watching on my ps3/ps4 and other 4k devices.

Exactly. I can steam 4k 60 video stream of gaming with nvidia gamestream and moonlight game streaming to my LG G5 with a gtx 970 and X5670 @ 3.1 and it works flawless. Even works well when trying with a 1055t@ 3.5ghz and the gtx 970. Guess its a stupid lock since only 7th gen cpus have IGP with support for 4k hardware decoding and are assuming everyone is using built in IGP to watch netflix on PC.

If you're already pushing this as a Windows 10 exclusive, why not deliver this via the app? It already supports 1080p and Dolby Digital+ with roughly the same interface. I prefer using it vs. a browser or the typically slow/clumsy TV apps. Hell, even Edge suggests you watch Netflix via the app rather than the browser. Hopefully a version that supports other Playready 3 devices (like newer Nvidia cards) will be incoming sooner than later.

Why this only works on Edge is a mystery to me,
There is no mystery here. You can't screen capture video in edge\IE\netflix app. It's some kind of Microsoft's anti-consumer DRM that prevents us from capturing what's going on on OUR displays. That's why Netlix limited other browsers(can be screen captured) to 720p only. As for Kaby Lake..
It also comes with support for HDCP 2.2 (High-Bandwidth Digital Copy Protection). This is a DRM package used to ensure that digital content isn’t intercepted between the source and the display. Although DRM remains hugely unpopular, HDCP is required to rent movies on iTunes and Amazon Instant Video, among other sites.
So. it's the same deal.. crappy anti-consumer DRM protection.

I agree so much with the sentiments being expressed here, but I think we've missed the obvious This move by Netflix/Microsoft is none other than a clever move in order to force consumers to upgrade their OS to Windows 10, that's all this is Just another shady backdoor move by Microsoft to FORCE consumers to upgrade to their latest pathetic NSA spyware Windows 10 We are fast approaching the day when NOTHING but Windows 10, or Intel Kaby Lake CPU's will work if you want to use your OS, or use Netflix, or browse the web

The Windows 10 app has surround support, so do most Smart TV apps. It's the browsers that don't have it.

Edge is much more efficient at using the GPU in general. Run some tests with it. For my wife's old Core 2/Intel 965 laptop, Edge is much snappier than anything else.

Netflix legitimately doesn't give a f*ck about that. They have apps for literally every platform out there. It's just that at the moment, Microsoft's browser seems to provide the technical requirements for Netflix better than anyone else. Chrome doesn't support surround sound and DRM for 1080p<. Netflix provides all these in Smart TV apps. It's a Google decision really.

Edge is easily the best browser when it comes to streaming video, I'm just do used to Chrome so that's why I tolerate it. I honestly don't know anyone who uses a browser for Netflix though, the W10 app is crap and not even as good as the 8.1 app, but it's much better than the browser version. TBH, if you have a new TV or even an oldish TV it's far better using the inbuilt app than going near browser video on the PC.

This requires Edge because it's the only browser that supports PlayReady DRM in 4k that Netflix requires. 10-bit HEVC decoding in hardware is only supported by Kaby (for systems with integrated GPUs).
HEVC Main10 is not only supported in Kaby. The GTX 950/960, the entire GTX 10xx series, and the Radeon RX series feature full HEVC Main10 hardware decode. Kaby isn't a necessity to view Netflix 4k unless some arrangement is made to lock out other alternatives.

Microsoft inadvertently created a reason to not purchase an xbox one s. The fact it is capable of streaming 4k, the Netflix app will not work for 4k on it. I would say that is not one of the smartest moves they have made. http://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one-s This should actually be in the vault of fail thread.

for the xbox i don't know (but as it use same hardware...), but for the PS4 there is still the 4K bug on the pro as on normal PS4.

 good luck with that 😀DD

It's 10-bit encoding, not Main10.

I don't know about Polaris but Pascal definitely supports 10bit encoding and is certified PlayReady 3.0 compatible. Nvidia even advertised that 4K netflix would be supported. Like I said before, I'm sure it's still coming - but the state of DRM and 4K movies on PC is really poor right now. It's just disappointing that I have to wait longer for something that should have been ready months, if not years ago.
