I can't say I agree with any soft\hardware locks, but it looks like MS, Intel and Netflix came up with some cunning collaboration plan. Good for them. I wonder if anyone else follows suit.

It looks like Microsoft and Intel bribed their way through again....

Smells like a cartel agreement.

AGREE with the above. It's a stupid pact that won't work for too long and MS with Intel is just kicking themselves in the rear again. People won't stop using Netflix because of this but will force it to support other HW/SW and in the end they will have to succumb.

the edge browser will be to force the ad revenue and secure you email and make sure who you are , its hard to surf the web on browsers other than microsoft explorer or google chrome because there checking who you are your location and all this stuff constantly , if you use adblock and noscript and flashblock they get mad lols coz microsoft and google dont want u doing it they lose profit even there already richest in the world they still need more right cant allow any competition or choices

I call BS on those specs it's just cartel time again that's all it is and nothing more

Stop that "cartel" talk nonsense, ok? There's nothing particularly wrong with that deal. It is not some Apple-like music\book cartel. Netflix is providing you with their service. It is completely up to them to decide which way\method\technology they are willing to do so while granting everyone the option to use it. You can buy Netflix-streaming box if you have problems with other platforms, there are 100+ options available. With that deal Netflix is just providing another option to use Kaby Lake\Windows system to access their services. That's it. You are not crying Netflix is not allowing you to watch its streams on ebooks for example? This case is no different. If you don't like it (option) - don't use it, this won't prevent you from accessing the service some other way.

With the HDCP 2.2 and AACS 2, It was only matter of time before those DRM solutions would be abused to death. Now everyone can make cartell partnerships to do whatever they like. Imagine for example a Denuvo-Micosoft-Nvidia or AMD alliance! Any game they would release would have awesome System Requirements : CPU:Intel Kaby Lake or equivalent Intel CPU. GPU:GTX 1080 or equivalent NVIDIA, OS: Windows 10 ONLY! Great for customers! Well! Time to vote with our pockets!

On Netflix you found nothing interesting in your own language (us english is the only solution to have some) and it is really expensive... So i don't use it 🙂 and even if i used it, home screen can run Netflix app by itself in these resolution...

Tin foil hats again... It simply seems that other browsers don't support h265 yet, and on the decoding side, only that cpu has support for it. so yeah. Unless you want to make your own browser and cpu combo... "H" codecs need a license, they are managed by an organization that you need to pay money to. And the H265 license is pricey. So it seems that MS had the money to buy the license, don't expect any opensource browsers to support h265 until an "x" implementation. Even for Chromium you need to compile it in a way that will support that codec. And you can't blame microsoft or intel for the HDCP thing... What i'm saying is blame netflix for not using the same deal as Youtube for the 4K content.

I'll never use Netflix again, but not because of this. So ages ago I cancelled my sub, then a few months later I looked at my bank statement and they had taken money. I called them, they said I renewed it but I didn't, they even looked and found I hadn't streamed anything since renewing. But they refused to give me my money back, so I had to go through my bank to get it back.

Isnt nearly all recent gpu's (at least 2016 ones ) support HDCP 2.2 and H265 4K ? find an old list of hardware for H265 dating from january 2016 : - Intel 6th-generation ‘Skylake’ Core processors or newer - AMD 6th-generation ‘Carizzo’ APUs or newer - AMD ‘Fiji’ GPUs (Radeon R9 Fury/Fury X/Nano) or newer - Nvidia GM206 GPUs (GeForce GTX 960/950) or newer - Other Nvidia GeForce GTX 900 series GPUs have partial HEVC hardware decoding support - Qualcomm Snapdragon 805/615/410/208 SoCs or newer. Support ranges from 720p decoding on low-end parts to 4K playback on high-end parts. - Nvidia Tegra X1 SoCs or newer - Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 5430 SoCs or newer - Apple A8 SoCs or newer - Some MediaTek SoCs from mid-2014 onwards

It smells like another 'partnership' to get more people into using Edge because its offering a feature 'you cannot get this anywhere else' type of situation. I dont use Edge, i will never and def will not use Edge with Netflix for that specific scenario. Their closed walled crap with Windows 10 is undoing them from the inside out, and they know it! No one is interested anymore. Im loving Windows 10 LTSB, its perfect.

My BB can just about do 1080i streaming. I have no need for this.

Old Rockefeller man told decades ago in his book that "competition is a sin". Which many of us interpreted as : "The rich of us should have the monopoly". Capable hardware such Skylake CPUs wont have 4k Netflix because Skylakes are not required to have Windows 10... Well, I'll skip on Netflix, Edge, Kaby Lake and W10... boohoo I'm so 20th centrury...

Netflix works on devices from smart TVs to Android devices to Linux-based HTPCs to full-blown PCs. The fact that a H.265 codec requires a very specific Intel CPU, a very specific browser that only exists on a specific OS is obviously not Netflix's doing. There is no evidence suggesting this should be so restricting.
You can buy Netflix-streaming box if you have problems with other platforms, there are 100+ options available.
Except, nothing seems to make it clear those alternatives will work with 4K, hence one of the issues with this.

What annoys me is that Nvidia specifically said that pascal/GM206 chips are playready 3.0 and would support 4K netflix. I'm sure it's still coming, but it's kind of annoying that the first iteration only supports Kabylake. I personally don't care if it's Netlfix/Microsoft/MPAA or whomever's fault - the entire system is bad from a consumer standpoint and needs to be fixed.
https://forums.guru3d.com/data/avatars/m/259/259654.jpg
This requires Edge because it's the only browser that supports PlayReady DRM in 4k that Netflix requires. 10-bit HEVC decoding in hardware is only supported by Kaby (for systems with integrated GPUs).

That is a crazy high CPU requirement... My TV and XB1S both support 4k Netflix so I am not too broken up about it. Netflix has always been a bit weird about HD content in Windows. For a long time you could not get any HD content in a web browser, it had to be a Netflix app.

Edge and Internet Explorer have also been the only browsers to have 1080p at Netflix (which I guess is extremely more popular than 4k), so I don't get why people suddenly are throwing a fuzz about Edge being required for 4k No browser supports 5.1 audio either.
