so if they "reverse engineered it"... what? does it work on the 1151 v1 and v2 sockets? pretty essential point missing from the article.

LOL this is not even funny anymore.

Did they even fix any of the security holes? This is quite weird stuff indeed. Maybe they should have had GF produce them some more modern lower clocks products. The GF 12nm process should be better than Intel's 22nm for that much.

Considering that they offer to pay $140k to people that find bugs and loopholes in their hardware, rather than attempt to fix anything - I think the answer is obvious in this case. Giant is crumbling and it has issues, now they play dirty.

The costs to move a product to different node are quite substantial, so Intel outsourcing production of anything to a different fab would be an expensive undertaking - even if the other node claims to be the same size, they are all very different. On the OT: Intels "capacity issues" are only an issue because way too many people want to buy Intel CPUs, not because Intels capacity is "low". They can't produce enough for the demand that is there. In fact they have had record revenue the last quarters. If Intel can sell a 6 year old Pentium on 22nm, that doesn't sound like its a good thing for AMD, because if people are willing to buy those instead of AMD CPUs .. then AMD has some serious marketing work to do (or their CPUs are also not available?).

Doesnt have a chance vs AMDs 3000g $49 chip. Unless they're targeting the lowest end OEM market and can sell it for $30-35. Still enough for basic browsing, office, school work, etc.

Checks calendar... Nope. Not April yet.

Old man Intel must have mis-heard me - need to shout louder - "I SAID I JUST REPLACED A HASWELL i7 970 CPU WITH AN AMD R9 3900X! NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND"

Intel's going to use Samsung's foundry as it is. But apparently it's still not enough if they went back to their archives to dig up ancient CPUs for reintroduction using their own old facilities, which probably have been only used for some ethernet chips and whatnot for years now.

AMD is selling all they can make, be it CPU's or GPU's. They have a lot less Fab time, as Intel has their own Fabs, and AMD is Fabless, so has to rely on TSMC and GF. The Fact that Intel has to go back to 22nm, doesn't make me think that Intel is selling soooo much stock, its that they converted too many Fabs to new Process, that didn't work. This is costing them HUGE amounts of cash, which they are going to hide from the shareholders somehow (as Fab upgrades etc...). Intel is up a SERIOUS creek, without a paddle, or maybe a spork. Yes, they have Huge market share, and money reserves, but that only lasts so long....

What is making me think that they are selling a lot of stock is their record revenues in the last year or so. Their margins have gone down as they lose some money on their fab problems, but the revenue is up, which means overall sales are doing just fine. https://www.anandtech.com/show/15030/intel-announces-q3-fy-2019-earnings-record-results Q3'19 was their highest quarter in revenue ever in the history of Intel.

What the actual f? This is getting out of hand, who still buys Intel CPUs anyway?

With all due respect to everyone mocking Intel on their decision, I sincerely doubt that anyone buying a Pentium CPU really cares which process is it build upon. The whole point of a budget build is to make it cheaper. They made a good call imho.

I can understand bringing an old CPU back to life but surely they could use something better right?...
