I'm seriously happy about this. Finally a decent upgrade after all these years. The fact that we can drop a Broadwell chip in the Z97's when we feel like it is a bonus! Well after BIOS updates roll out.

Dang, I'm coming from Wolfdale! I feel like I'm a little kid again waiting for Christmas to happen lol!

Does it means tha the golden area of Sandy bridge massive OC is back?

It appears to be just that. Now I'm torn... should I upgrade or not. CPU performance-wise, it's not that super-huge upgrade for me, but I'd get it at much less heat and noise, and with new features, like cheaper RAM, USB 3.0, SATA III, and perhaps Thunderbolt.

Tbh I would hold a few months more for X99/5930-5820K. The only worthy upgrade tbh from your system.

Its ~7C cooler then haswell Clock for clock vs voltage for voltage. I wouldn't expect any miracles like that 5.5ghz air, must have been a very special chip then πŸ€“ The best I've seen so far was one ES 4790k 5ghz @ 1.32v with Z87 asrock (overclock.net), with AIO 240/280L cooling. Anything over 1.4v is toasty.. By Haswell its 1.3v+ if not with good cooling.

Yeah, it makes sense. Thanks. The current i7's (including the old ones) are so good that it doesn't make much sense upgrading in most cases. I think I'd wait for some interesting monitors to crop up, like good image quality + low lag + high dpi + adaptive vsync, and then build whole rig around such monitor.

Man I can't wait because this will be a huge upgrade for me coming from an LGA 775 Quad Core.

Bro it would be a rather massive upgrade for you actually. You are talking 35-45%+ increases across the board in many areas. Being gaming/video etc.

This was true until the good news about the high OC on the i7 4790K. Now it makes more sense to save the cash and get a cpu with a great instruction set, with high ghz. DDR4 in it's self wont bring much, mainly in benches. If you OC DDR3 high enough as it is there will be no issue.

I'm gonna shoot for 6.0 just 'cause you said that πŸ€“ JK, I'll be happy if I hit 5. Might try for 5.2 if I'm really bored some day and it actually turns out to be a good chip.

5-5.2 ghz seems more realistic for sure. 5.5ghz is just what this thing can do on air tops....and a top bin chip.

It'd be really cool to see people pushing near 6 Ghz on water. Pun somewhat intended.

6Ghz heh. It might be possible on liquid cooling depending on the type of liquid cooling system you have. But in reality on liquid cooling 5.7-5.8 might be possible.

Yeah, I wonder if a de-lid would make a significant difference with this one.

Yes 4cores 8ht @ 6.3ghz on LN2 πŸ˜€, still.. http://hwbot.org/submission/2558129 I think you will be looking at something as mine 4.7 -5ghz on good sample @ ~ 1.32v, but cooler, well temps will still become a limit above 1.35v+.. I wouldn't want to feed it above 1.4v Mine cinebench15 core0 up to 74C @ 4.7ghz 1.275v, + negative temp gap from that Finish? site >> then 4790k @ same 4.7ghz 1.275v core0 ~66C.. For example I get such temps @ 4.6ghz 1.23v with H90 cooler 2x custom P/P 2.74 pressure h2o fans.

Overall 4.6 - 4.8Ghz should be pretty much guarantied πŸ™‚, anything more same lottery, still good that they finally fixed this low OC gap,.. I mean 4770k one 4.2ghz @ 1.35 vs another 1.12v @ 4.2ghz is huuge and a big disaster, luckily I got a good 4770k sample so I can't really complain πŸ€“

My H90 keeps my 3770K at 4.4-4.6ghz under 67C, so I don't think I'll have problems reaching a high OC on the 4790K thankfully.

That's about the same I could get on my 3770K@4.8, voltage wise, the temps were higher especially in games like BF3/4 I would reach 85-87C on a H100 with 4 CM Sickle fans in push pull... I wouldn't bother unless I know I'd have a guaranteed 5.2+ OC with temps under 90C in max stress.

If the 4790K canΒ΄t reach 5ghz with an high end air or water cooler, then iΒ΄m gonna be really disappointed with Intel... Need reviews and fast!!!
