You pretty much posted my build from back in the day. And we all watched that duel, too. Man, we're old.

Yes we have seen some great history in PC gaming. 😀 Remember the classic LAN parties on 28.8 baus and 56k modems? 5-6 Kilobytes per second was gold! LOL! I would carry my PC, Trinitron Monitor, mouse, beige colored Microsoft curved ergonomic keyboard and the mighty Altec Lansing speakers with subwoofer to each gathering back in 1997-1998. The Pentium 2's multimedia capabilities was mindblowing back then. America Online. LOL!!!! Tops! My PC specs 1997-1998 Pentium 2 350 and 450 Mhz Base Card ( I can't remember) Maybe the ATI 8MB All in Wonder? I remember watching TV on my PC. Diamond 3DII in SLI (1024X768) 🙂 128mb of EDO Ram 2X 4GB or 6gb WD and Quantum Fireball drives (Can't remember) lol CDROM and Burner Drives with 2x burn speeds LOL! 😀 Microsoft Keyboard with PS2 Rollerball Mouse. (We had to clean the ball and axis rotating rod manually lol!) SoundBlaster Live soundcard Altec Lansing Speakers with Subwoofer 19 inch Trinitron Monitor Good times!!! We had so much fun. Gaming is awesome now but the fellowship piece is not the same.

Did AMD drop the Athlon name or did they just stop making suitable new CPUs that would fit under the name? You can still see Athlons (with early gen Zen architecture) on AMD's website, as if they were current CPUs, and similarly shops are listing some cheap laptops or OEM desktops with an Athlon CPU.But does AMD currently even have real entry level CPUs with the latest architecture? They seem to be absent. I attributed that to the chip shortage, with AMD allocating what wafer orders it could get in to the better models. But if you have read somewhere AMD indeed did drop the name, then it certainly sounds more like Intel's decision, especially if AMD doesn't replace it with anything else. I'd say it would be just as stupid from AMD as it was from Intel.
I remember reading a statement from their Brand Management Director.

Celeron had a short lived legend that was kick ass for the time . Of course I am talking for the one and only the legend the myth Celeron 300A on slot2 few jumpers and it was running @450mhz beating in most cases the pentium II @450 mostly because the 256kb where on the board and not build in, while Celeron might had half the cache but it was build in the CPU!
You're right...I totally forgot! I had one during my college years and 450mhz OC was rock solid. A lot of people preferred them over Pentium's - imagine that...

OK, now I am nostalgic...I too remember the LAN parties, half of my free time was spent at these parties and the other half nose deep in my PC and reading PC magazines, buying my first dvd burner - an plextor 2X and all my friends coming at my house to burn them CD's with free games and software from magazines, endless discussions that we had over which is better: a slot or a socket CPU, my YAMAHA sound card on ISA slot that had a sound nothing compares even today...oh...I am an old fart!

Gentlemen. We are all honorary members of the old fart PC Gamers Club. LOL! Oh yes! Anyone with a burner was the life of the party lol! Remember downloading a song on 56k at 5-6 kilobytes per second? 1 song would take about 18-20 minutes. I'm happy to have the experience and great memories. I stepped away from PC gaming for a few years due to work and other hobbies. I returned to Guru3d over a year ago and it has been great. Things that I've forgotten have been relearned and the members have been extremely helpful. Sometimes I feel like a noob due to so many technical leaps that happened. Another Pentium that got me through some rough days during college was the Pentium MMX 133mhz in my Toshiba Satellite Pro. Windows 95 version b was so solid.

I also miss how friendly and welcoming the internet was back then. A small community of tech jocks helping each other. We have that here at Guru3d. Gotta keep the forum going and support it.

I feel your back pain gentlemen. Maybe I shouldn't have carried my 21" Trinitron to LAN parties after all 😉 I'm going to pour one out for the good old Pentium tonight, though I suspect that Intel will bring it back one day. Nostalgia is one hell of a marketing drug.
