Prices are bad, but there is nothing worth buying either - gpu's currently on the market (with the exception of the extremely overpriced titan volta) are 2 years old... if one has just a bit of smarts, you don't buy 2 year old gpu's for full price, and certainly not twice the normal full price.
Unless your GPU is more than 2 years old, unless you baught a full system / was giftet one with no dGPU inside or only a weak one, unless your GPU broke down, unless you can afford it and still want a new system, etc. The good thing is, everybody thinks it's going to get a little better with the GPUs. Not sure if and when that talk is going to become reality though πŸ˜€

I'd say unless you don't have a gpu at all, for whatever reason, you really shouldn't buy a gpu till the new ones come... i'd say wait it out, even if you are still on kepler gpu's. Well yeah... i'm gonna preorder as soon as the new gpu's comes up for sale, before miners can inflate the prices of those gpu's - at least in denmark, they aren't allowed to increase the purchase price from the price you preorder items for. Did that with my 1080's 2 years ago aswell πŸ™‚

And you think that miners aren't smart enough to do the same? πŸ˜€ Yeah, the only way to get a GPU these days is grab 'em while they're around and hope you can get one. Especially with new releases or GPUs at "normal" prices.

If you do it the moment they are released, miners can't have preordered everything. Besides, most retailers only allow you to preorder 2 gpu's.

I wonder how many years until gpu prices go back to normal.

Yeah, it's true, you're only allowed 2 per person. So if a shop gets any number, say 250 GPUs to sell, it's still the same situation: do you make it to the 125 first people to order, or not? Yeah it can't happen that 10 miners buy up all the cards, but it doesn't really help if there's literally thousands of people preying on a release. I bought my GPU before the mining craze took on the ridiculous dimensions it has today, but this time around I'll be ordering day 1 if possible (well, then the next TI gets released), even though I'll have to wait for a waterblock to show itself, keeping the GPU resting at home for no apparent use than to at least have one. I feel stupid doing that, but it can't be helped, I'll certainly not wait till a year afterwards just because miners are gobbling up those GPUs like a parching man in the desert.

Everyone cried on the interwebz 2 years ago that there were no 1080's available on release, and a good while after that... well, i preordered mine asap, and got mine on release. I plan on doing the same again πŸ˜‰

hehe exactly my thinking! When the 1080Ti was released thankfully everybody was jumping on the AMD cards still, I was able to buy one "normally", wouldn't count on it this time though.

Most likely what is considered normal will be a bit higher priced than where it was. I do not see GPU prices coming down that far, regardless of supply.

Yep, even if all GPU mining stops, the prices will never go down to the previous "low", I'm sure of it.

Multiple things: 1) This guide should appear in the normal article list (where it ought to stick for awhile). Having it only in the banner will miss many folks who simply assume that the banner replicates / highlights the list. 2) It's "nybble", not "nibble". 3) Raffaele actually takes on two elephants. One is parts prices, and the other is FPS chasing. Congrats especially for laying out the facts on the latter. Nobody ever, ever admits the obvious: spending $300 extra on a GPU that will hit Ultra-Super-Duper-Q instead of just VeryGood-Q is a complete waste - as are the PSU and cooling system to support that. With a game that *is* worth playing (I'm a Crysis fanboi) you'll never notice the difference. With the 99.8% of hi-gfx games that are not worth playing, you can only enjoy the benches. 4) Which leads to amazement that people will still buy Intel to get that last worthless FPS, when AMD so desperately needs our support and has done everything possible - and what many felt was impossible - to earn it. Remember, if you keep buying Intel because of some marginal advantage today, AMD may not stay afloat. Then Intel will be free to delay progress forever, and your 2020 CPU will be 2/3 of what might have been - no matter how much you pay (and you will pay!). Get a clue folks.
