Why would they? Steam currently has a monopoly on PC gaming. There is no need for them to spend money giving away free games. Epic are currently losing money on the Epic Store in a forceful attempt at getting more users by giving games away for free and to score exclusive game releases (something which I am totally against on PC) But right now Epic Game launcher is nothing more than a Fortnite launcher. Valve are more focused on VR and now Steam Deck. Their software platform is leaps and bounds ahead of any of their competition in terms of ease of use, UI design, and most of all features built up over the past 15+ years. Could they? Sure. Will they? Not right now.
Let´s not forget the support devoted to Linux from Steam. They are one of the few companies actively supporting gaming on Linux. Of course they have their own reasons for that but still it´s something we all should recognise and applaud.

Meh, the first thing one should do after his steam deck has arrived is install windows on it. 😀
