Translation: Nvidia overbuilt the 4080 pcb, so it won't die fast enough to get you to buy new hardware next generation.

I believe they simply used the same PCB on 4090 and 4080 (the amount of VRMs on the 4080 was ludicrous for a GPU with that power draw.) For the amount they were charging for these cards, it was probably cheaper for them to use the same PCB than design and manufacture two different ones.

Well, they have to save money somehere after that gigantic price cut...

RealNC:

Hm. Given almost the same price (4080 is a tiny bit cheaper than the S right now,) do you think a 4080 is actually recommended over a 4080 S due to better PCB?
"Simplified" doesnt equal "Worse" Unless there are some major shortcuts taken a 4080S from a reputable manufacture should last until it has become AAA obsolete is my guess.

This only applies to the FE. AIB cards have different power circuitry, VRM phases. If your not a hard core OC'er I dont think it matters. I would probably choose according to price than other criteria.

except in this case where the components aren't better but less, just less.
