I'm sure if valve does this then there'll be a separate section for these people, so it should be easy to filter out the amateur crap.
I do think steam is becoming a bottleneck in a systems perspective anyway. While it could be a lot worse, it seems to get more bloated every other month. The Linux version is just as bad.

Bad idea IMO.
If I understood it right he wants it to be some sort of Amazon.com.
Well, okay but big companies like EA or Blizzard wouldn't join in anyway so I'm still going to use steam and other stuff nevertheless.

Bad idea indeed
For me it seems that Gabe has totally lost focus. First Steam Box with all the nonsense "we think all game controllers are bad but we don't have a better idea" (lolled) and then this right after... They are just trying to do Google and force themselves between end users and businesses instead of doing something that would benefit people like they once did.
The current model works in my opinion. Just improvements to mod support and so on is needed but otherwise the business model is ok as is. They should just focus on making Steam better and stop having these nonsense ideas. Also get back into making great games and easy-to-mod engines.
I understand he fears Windows 8 store but the right way to compete is to do things better, not running away and try to figure out a way to circumvent the "problem". They are already a mile ahead. At least I'm not following.

Sometimes, I think Gabe Newell would be better off just fading into obscurity than constantly opening his mouth. This time is no different....
Valve owns Steam....so, by way of ownership, they should be able to tell you what you can and can't buy using their service.

Am i missing something? Because this just seems like Steam turning into YouTube, where anyone can put stuff on there and if it's successful then those people can make some money.
Good idea in a way, but it also sounds like a way for Valve to make more money as they will now be taking a cut off alot more stuff.
Fair enough, but if some or alot of this content is junk or broken then who is responsible for dealing with this from both a technical and financial point of view.

Gabe Newell is just scared that Steam might actually have some competition at some point and is trying to take control of digital distribution before that happens...
