I just built a brand new $1,700 Ryzen (R5 3600) rig 3 months ago, and I'd be feeling pretty foolish if it was trumped by a laptop CPU at just 15W.
FWIW it's 35w and it basically ties the 2700X. The 9700K is a given as this has 8 more threads and timespy's CPU score is rather thread dependent (it will most likely score higher than the 3600 as well).. it's impressive. I'm more curious to see how the 15w parts perform in real world though.

I want to see desktop variants going against their respective Ryzen 3k counterparts please AMD, thank you. And while you're at it, get that stuff to the shelves.

I'm waiting for legit reviews. I find it a little hard to believe it'll sustain this kind of performance at 15W.
neikosr0x:

Well with Intel releasing the same CPU on laptops every year is no surprise. Intel has been milking people every year with the same tech over and over with small improvements and on the laptop department, they are actually fkd because they can't go around increasing TDP with higher core counts or frequencies.
I'd argue Intel has been releasing a worse product every year, considering the never-ending vulnerabilities that keep getting patched and slowing things down.

The 4800hs is a 35W part. The 4800U is for some reason pictured.

Loophole35:

This is TDP not actual power draw. It may consume more or less.
With AMD, TDP generally implies total power draw when fully stressed (however, given that this is HS and modified, it may not conform to those standards... unless they managed to undervolt the chip to drop TDP to 35W and stay within those limits for the whole chip). With Intel, TDP implies power draw at base clocks only... actual power draw is usually higher.

15W parts should peform as advertised (aka fine) so long as they are given proper cooling. I noticed that when it comes to AMD mobile parts, OEM's tend to skimp on cooling and pair them with lower quality parts. Lenovo in particular gave AMD 3500u/3700u machine a cooling assembly with 1 pipe, whereas the Intel equivalent got a cooling with 2 pipes (no dGPU's on either machine). The situation in mobile space would be much better for AMD if OEM's were playing ball with AMD parts and not skimping on quality or cooling.

Some day it will be a nice replacement to my toaster 8300H. Dang thing runs at 95 at 3.8.Though it's no slouch even at that temp and speed.

As has been stated multiple times already, it's 35W. Picture used is for 4800u, which is a 15 watt part. Article is about the 4800HS, which is 35 watt. As to the performance vs a 2700x, i don't think it's that far off at least in regards to the specs of the 4800HS (not certain about the 35watt part) 2700x is 3.7Ghz base 4.3Ghz boost 4800HS is (supposedly) 2.9Ghz base, 4.2Ghz boost With the IPC increase in Zen 2, that 4.2Ghz boost should be faster then the 2700x, which would make it faster in certain workloads anyways. Now what i don't fully understand is the difference between the 4800H and 4800HS, HS is 35W and H is 45W but both state from any information i can find, the same stats otherwise..... Difference in gpu maybe?

AMD is really not tired of winning. I wonder how Apple is feeling right now being married to Intel for so long ... I'm sure it looks "in the garden"

That is just fantastic! AMD has been moving the needle on the dormant CPU front for a few years now. Intel needs to up their game. Wow us with something amazing. Core2Duo. Sandy Bridge. Something.

Not to take anything away from Lisa, but chips have incredible lag times. Decades ago a buddy from Intel had told me they had just internally completed designing the "Pentium 6." The pentium 3 was newly in stores. I strongly suspect that much of the engineering improvements we have been seeing from AMD were implemented under the engineer CEO think his name was Dirk Meyer. Not sure where he is now but I hope he landed on his feet, since as I said we may have him to thank for much of this progress.

Apple should have gone with AMD TR in their Mac Pro instead of Xeon W, maybe next one.

Apple is rumored to already be testing AMD CPUs in their Macbooks... we shall see what happens further down the road.

Too bad outside of hipsters and people that think they need a mac there is no legit reason to get a Mac.

If I recall right, HS is just better binned to consume 10W less. It will be exclusive for ASUS... at least for for a bit.

I think you're thinking of Jim Keller (the architect who designed Zen, ) Dirk Meyer left in 2011 and Jim Keller was brought back in 2012-2015 to design Zen during Rory Reads reign.

that is crazy if true @ 15 watts? hell even 35watts. makes you wonder what AMD can do for desktops for it next desktop cpu's AGAIN if true
