I honestly have to say, I find the dark theme a bit lacking in terms of visibility: Grey links are grey on a grey background, the notifications in the top right corner are no longer red on white background, but grey on grey as well... Can one change that? Would I have to hack a CSS or something?

Try using the Midnight Lizzard extension. It allows to implement a dark mode on any site, and customize almost every color of it.

I don't use dark theme too :V I found most of "dark themes" (web, os, apps) not developed on a standard sRGB calibrated screen at all and so they are really awful (too low contrast between elements) or even sometimes eyes hurting (too high contrast). I keep my screen at 125cd/m2^ circa (yes I know the standard is ~80 but nobody uses it since was choose for CRT screens), so default theme suits fine on my screen.
