Yeah.... so all their free money was to get people onto the platform and generate unwanted funnel sales? And there I thought they were giving free games away for the kindness of their heart, and only altruistic motives behind it!
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/QxJHJPCh65A/hqdefault.jpg
Saving payment data and voice activation? If that is what they got them on, kinda sure it won't matter. Too bad the FTC couldn't catch this a few years ago and avoid the problem instead of just asking for money for it. We will see thou. There is a reason why many people will buy ONLY on steam and never touch origin, ubiconnect, and similar.

I understand the loot boxes issues... But these?
notably because voice and text chat features were enabled by default for young players and their user names were made public. Epic implemented default settings that limit conversation, obscure usernames, and need invitations to join
With this logic all online games should not have text and voice chat enabled, as well account names, if the player is not a verified adult? :|

$500 million - that's a sh1t load of character skins they now have to re-sell - I just contributed 20 Euro to them myself last week I actually don't think they are as bad as others in the "trick the parents out of money by using their children" game - I heard my sister say she had to remove Alexa because it was auto-signing them up and charging them for stuff, by simply asking if they wanted to sign-up/pay for something and any 5yo in the room at the time could just answer "yes" and Alexa would take that as a verbal agreement and sign them up! The children were answering Alexa without any parent in room at all and costing her money for something. Crazy sneaky practices all around the industry it seems.

That's too funny

$500 Million is one month of revenue in Fortnite. So basically a slap on the wrist for Epic.

yes, if you are 16 ask your mom to enable chat and discord, or just make online games pegi 18 or whatever age is appropriate. a 9yold playing fortnite and being eventually contacted by stranger is not fine imho.

With the direction the world is going, 16 year old kids don't have to ask, they simply threat their parents into submission.

16 year olds can drink in some countries, drive cars in others, are old enough to work as an adult and well, have kids. A 16 year old is NOT a child. A 6 year old who sees his Spiderman skin for 10 bucks in Fortnite and simply clicks it is a kid. But I honestly was more here about the second problem the FTC had with them.

But how much money did they make off of these schemes? Any meaningful fine must be notably more than that amount, inflation-adjusted, before it becomes more than just the cost of doing business.

There is no chance at all a 16 years old will ask for permission to use discord .... I know I was not ... And for more hmmm spicy sites I was Always 18+ ....

all (99.9%?) online games have voice and text chat. with this logic any app or game that has voice or text chat should verify the user age. this is mindfuck. If you are an adult and you leave your credit card credentials saved on your son PC you must be blamed: the kid could use it in any way and any website. If you leave a 6-13yo kid playing whatever game he/she want without having a look at it, than you are a BAD parent. If a 16yo cannot handle a basic features like online games text and voice chat, than he has some serious problems you should check with a specialist and probably you are a bad parent and part of the problem. BTW, PEGI is a recommendation, not a mandatory requirement. Any yes, fining Epic, as well any other company, for that scam called lootboxes is a good thing instead.

I did not post this, so I regard that quote as a response to @asturur since it was his. 🙂 But I have to say, I'm inclined to agree with @Alessio1989 here

You pay some fines, offer up a scapegoat if the masses are incensed, and then go back to business as usual. Not many are willing to watch a company burn anymore.

This is the usual modus operandi. They just want to up the budget of w/e governmental body is fining them. In reality, I have not seen a company really get punished for wrongdoing in a long time. Like... forever? 😀

The real story here is @fantaskarsef doesn't use the forum's dark theme. He should be fined half a billion imo

Honestly, I don't like how it looks, but it doesn't take off the guilty feeling. On the other hand... why not use the only style that's actually called after the site? 😀
