When I was looking for a laptop a couple of years ago, I simply googled the CPU model every time I was looking at the laptop specs. It's certainly not like the simple desktop CPU naming I'm far more used to. Intel seems to have its own quirks as well.

AMD desktop cpus are easily to explain but the laptop naming is awful and confusing.

at least 11/12/13th gen is 11/12/13th gen. some mobile r7000s are still zen2 with ddr5 controllers.

Yeah, I considered it pretty low behavior to use chips of the previous gen under a model number that suggests a newer gen, mixed among the real new chips. But then again, if you google the model number, the truth will always be revealed. If someone doesn't do even that much research, they probably couldn't care less, as long as the laptop turns on and runs whatever basic software they need to use. That's probably what AMD was counting on. What has confused me for a long time with Intel laptop chips are the models with one less digit in the model name than the rest. Like you have "i7-12700H", which seems simple enough. But then you also have "i7-1255U". What happened there, huh?

not a huge difference in performance between zen4 and zen2 on the lower end of mobile because the clockspeeds are low and caches are small, for most productivity applications i think you would probably wouldnt get much better performance if they were zen 4 cores, the medocino chips have rdna 2 graphics and made on 6nm tsmc ,so I dont really see any reason to fuss about the naming, the ones i would complain about are the zen 3 7030 branded mobile , they are just cezanne chips , still on 7nm tsmc and ddr4 with vega graphics, thus lacking av1 decode and the newer display core ect. not that they are bad laptops, but they are definitely old and lacking on the efficiency and graphics front.

I do not say a googling is hard , but I am saying we shouldn't have too google to know what's in it ;p
