Unless you ran a scientific server farm, you have to be insane to switch to this from a 5820k.

Some of these comments are pathetic. '15% performance increase... what a snoozefest'... Anyone would think that Intel's main priority is to pander to the wishes of the elite enthusiast just so they can buy a new CPU each year. Grow up will you... If this isn't for you then just be happy and enjoy what you have. Most of the time the very same people complain that games don't utilise high-end hardware anyway.

15% ipc over haswell is very very good

This chip doesn't cater to anything. Literally even IT people working @ render farms probably think to themselves "Is paying about 20k for a bunch of these cpu's really worth the 2% performance improvement? Nah." Its kinda boring for everyone if the only new upgrade in the new cpu's is either some barely improved power efficiency or the Igpu being a bit better. Its just very very stagnant, and I blame the lack of competition in the cpu market for this.

"Up to" and that is only one specific scenario.. Some really like to make it sound more then it actually is and keep grinding that old record - blowing things out of proportion.. Like Skylake, yes vs Sandy it is a little faster no doubt, but vs Haswell not really.. Unless you're impressed by that 2-5fps boost at stock vs stock ๐Ÿ˜€ I posted this in Kaby lake might as well here, how much did fps change Sandy vs Ivy vs Haswell vs Broadwell vs Skylake

No doubt, but if there's an actual 15% ipc improvement over haswell that is insanely good, i doubt it though

Even if there is a 15% improvement in IPC, it will only be achieved under certain circumstances. There's a reason that they generally state "up to" when giving performance improvement figures. IPC is very task dependent. Chips very rarely run at their maximum IPC.

Well they run at their maximum IPC in gaming, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰ Isnt that why we still need fast single core performance?

My i7 3770K in my desktop is 4 years old as of last month. At the time I bought it I did not expect it to be performing as well vs the new CPUs as it is now 4 years later. Thinking of the improvements in CPU performance/power in the 4 years prior to 2012 vs the 4 from then to 2016... I guess it's good for my wallet at least.

First of all, I think people are neglecting the fact that this a 6850k comparison that is second tier enthusiast and should be compared to the 5930k and not the 5820k. Secondly, let's remember that while they can just about match in turbo, they definitely don't match up in baseclock. These Benches are comparing a 3.3ghz vs a 3.6ghz chip. I somehow doubt that the new broadwells will overclock to more than 4.5ghz but we will see.

^ Nah apparently they were both @ 4.2Ghz and cache 3.3Ghz.. This was his 5820K OC limit with his intel custom "stock" cooling, could be that extended height stock cooler..

is the 6800k the replace ment for the 5820k? ior is the 6850k?

6800k is the new 5820k

I have OC'd x5690 @4.4ghz. Was going to upgrade to broardwell-e, but after your comments I'm not going to bother. Fast enough as it is. Won't see much of an improvement. Will get 2 x pascal when they come out though. Will see improvement from my hd7970ghz xfire.
