Founders Edition simply means early access. Micron does not yet started mass production of GDDR5X. Therefore GTX1080 cannot be mass-produced and we have Founders Edition.

PS. Founders Edition, must be more expensive because at this stage is small yield (more defective chips). Later chips certainly receive a lot of fixes. Eager to buy GTX1080 should wait for mass production.

Defective chips? Yields are great. There was article about it, and considering how high it can clock. There is very little variance in quality.

gddr5x?
There is no difficulty difference between GDDR5 and GDDR5X. It is only question of deciding to put them into manufacturing.

I'm gonna buy a dozen of these, forge emperor Huang's Hancock on the shroud with a golden sharpie, throw them up on Ebay for a cool 1500 and LMAO to the bank.

These reference cards will not disappear this time or only exist at Best Buy after awhile. They are going to be around from day one to the launch of the next arch. If this is such an overclocking monster, then what advantage will AIB custom boards have? Custom software tweaks only? Difference between this launch and previous ones is that the reference cards will be around long after launch. No need to scour eBay for a second one later on down the line. This launch is fubar. They have to attach a high price tag to the reference cards or the mainstream will think the new tech is junk, Nvidia does not even stand behind it, and not even AIB boards can save it. That's why the new name and price. Need to disassociate these cards from the connotations carried by reference. The actual MSRP is $699 (premium price for niche product). Usually these cards can only be found at Best Buy or in prefabbed computers. They are finally being made available to the public after the initial launch. So the price is set not only by Nvidia themselves but also by the likes of Maingear and such. Nvidia is not going to undercut the price charged by that market or risk losing market share in that segment.

I really hope Palit jump on this, if not I'd be more than happy with a Jetstream edition of the 1070. My 970 is freakin sweat, runs beautifully and supported with BIOS updates.

With this "Founder's Edition" garbage, I'm considering jumping ship to AMD based solely on principle..... NVidia knows the reference coolers are garbage. That's why AIBs release cards with custom coolers. The last 2 cards I had with reference coolers both throttled trying to run at their stock clocks because they overheated. NVidia has a lot of nerve trying to rip customers off this way....

I would say "same" but I already had a ton of reasons to buy from AMD instead. nVidia are like cartoon villains at this point and no one even bats an eyelid, it's the norm now, our world is so ****ed up. The only reason I even have a 970 right now instead of 290X is because the 290X I got was defective. Boy do I regret not searching for another one now.

great to see ppl complaining about a product, when they dont even know that its NOT the normal reference cooler. its an upgraded edition with vapor chamber, which is more expensive to make as well. plus, i dont see nvidia holding a gun to anyone's head, forcing "you" to buy it. do, or dont, but dont whine, just cause you dont like that they can do it. and as long as amd hasnt anything close in performance with same or lower tdp etc, i wont switch just because. last three builds from ppl that wanted an amd gpu, wouldnt even install the ccc properly, so another reason ill pass on amd for now

You speak a lot of sense 🙂:):), and this is where i'm also standing strong and not running out and buying two immediately, i want to give AMD a go next time i upgrade , Nvidia are like Intel now and charging whatever they want, even for a product that now cost less to produce. Founded edition = what a load of bull$$$$ .....
You have such a powerful rig that I would guess next logical upgrade would be big pascal or vega 😀 I can't see 1080 being that much faster then 980ti in real life situations while Polaris won't be reaching 980 ti speeds. If we think about 1080 @ ~1700 or so clocks vs stock normal 980 in nvidias slides. The 980 is 60% slower so if the 1080 was clocked down to 1200 it would be roughly 20% faster clock for clock then a 980. And founders edition lol wth Nvidia.

Not installing ccc properly, doing something wrong there. I don't see point getting lower performing card either tho for the same price. Vapor Chamber woopdey doo. It was their basic reference cooler for 780, 780ti and Titan. It ain't magic it will be worse then custom cooled ones and it will even cost more then most. 100€ is not what this cooler would in reality cost.
