Not sure how they're doing recently, haven't used it for years since Spotify arrived on the scene but the best music player was definitely AIMP - https://www.aimp.ru/ - Looks like it's still receiving frequent updates. For video, it has to be either MPC-HC https://mpc-hc.org/ or PotPlayer - https://potplayer.daum.net/ - Both extremely robust. VLC is always worth a mention for people that want something that works out-of-box without too much customization.

Potplayer is adware infested/riddled with bloatware, but that's your choice if you prefer their UI.
What bloatware? Never seen any ads. oO

When was the last time you updated? There's been numerous complaints all over reddit about it. Using an outdated version is a security risk (just an fyi).
Just reading about it now. https://www.reddit.com/r/potplayer/comments/e7afpj/pot_player_displaying_pop_up_ads_while_playing/ Using the latest, the only thing I've seen is a small window pop-up with the PotPlayer logo from time to time - https://i.imgur.com/CJpMRhx.jpg Some sort of ad placeholder? I can empathize with them for needing funds for development, but I may switch to MPC-HC. Thanks for the heads-up.

CCCP isn't required for JRMC. For those that only care about music and prioritize a lightweight/minimal resource hog, foobar is superior to everything else (has been for a while).
yes...most people play music and watch videos:)

Media Player Classic for life! πŸ™„

JRMC is probably the best allrounder. If you don't care about video and have more money than common sense, there's always Roon.

IT was always trash compared to any free app . Maybe that will change ? I guess there are many average joes that use it...
Version 10 and older were fine for a built-in tool. They needed more codecs but MS didn't provide them for licensing reasons. I really didn't like 11+.

Pointless. There's so many better alternatives.
That's like saying Notepad or Paint are pointless. They're not meant to be good, they're just placeholders so you have something usable. For a long while, I've questioned why MS didn't make them more feature-rich and actually worth using (like what Apple has done with their stock accessories) but then I realized: A. They might get sued for being anticompetitive. B. They might be prioritizing stability over features. Better to have something that always does what it's expected to do, than to have additional features that could potentially cause it to break.

VLC should just be included with Windows - it's lightweight, reliable, no BS, tons of options
I really like VLC and have it installed on all of my computers, but it isn't at all lightweight, and I've had my fair share of bugs with it. I'd take it over Media Player any day without hesitation, but, I wouldn't include it with Windows.

Its never going to beat HQPlayer for quality so wont see any use here.

Stop grasping at straws and scrambling for relevance, clown. Name one free all-in-one alternative that's inherently superior to JRMC. Pro-tip, you can't. Because free programs typically specialize in one aspect of media. Muppet. And learn to multi-quote instead of spamming.
I don't actively use JRMC but what about Kodi?

Really? Tidal is fairly mainstream now. Since you're asking it's certainly not worth it for your use case, as you'll need Hi-Fi audio equipment to reap the benefits. As for JRiver, I don't have any complaints (been using it exclusively for my library needs since 2005). Foobar is another excellent alternative but requires tinkering (that's why it's free...)
I only use simple DAC + Bookshelf speaker + Headphones in my PC tho. Maybe I'll look into it later. Ahh yes, been using Foobar since my college years up till now. No compaints whatsoever. Anyway, thanks for the info.

In the case of Notepad, MS can't make it because it would take the place of MS Wordpad. And Wordpad can't be made better, because then it would cannibalize sales from MS Word. In the case of Paint. I guess that's because MS never bought a company with a better image workflow. Like they did with Word and a few other programs.

Getting emotional about what software is installed on other people's machines is as loony as it gets. That being said I do LOL a bit when I find an enthusiastic BSplayer user every now and then πŸ™‚ Re: Potplayer Never seen an ad in my life. If I had, that would be the last of it. I also have MPC-BE and MPC-HE handy, just in case. Fooplayer for audio - what else. https://abload.de/img/screenshot2021-11-180uyjla.png

I donΒ΄t mind media player and i use it all the time but i wish that MS would allow to "stick" it on the taskbar like before.
right click the taskbar windows media icon when it's opened and pin to taskbar . still works

Hate to be "that guy" - but there's nothing wrong with being passionate in life. Imagine going on about your daily life having absolutely no charisma whilst not having passion for something you love. How dull must your life be? That's what differentiates humans from AI after all... and you're definitely not popular with the ladies acting like a certified weirdo. Condolences, mate.
Spot on m8. I really dig the self generosity. You're not acting like an angry weirdo at all πŸ˜€

It lacks functionality , which players like mpc-hc does have. No automatic subtitle downloading, putting sound into stereo gave me the commentary feed, no screen filling / picture adjustment options. The older wmp was far more usefull TBH.
