I'm genuinely impressed.

no UT, don't care.

This demo was running at 1440p, 30 fps and it wasn't using ray tracing.

Looks good except for the 'fluid simulation'.

Yeah, the moment he said new fluid sim, and when she walked I was like yeah no.. For example Destiny2 has better water refraction. Rest looks great.

realtime? I think we few years out from seeing "gameplay" quality from that, I still dont think the Tech demos "qaulity" for UE4 are in "gameplay" current games

It dont even need it from what i saw.

Yeah, After seing this demo, it's hard to justify RTX and it's huge performance impact. No game or tech demo using RTX looked as good as this one.

The two men at the beginning of the video were some of the best humanoid models rendered real time that I've seen.

Barely any lighting was shown off here.. even from Unreal the main benefit of Lumen is just real time GI - which is cool but it's not going to be as accurate as RT GI and it's not going to handle reflections, refraction, caustics, etc - so it's not even comparable. The real technology here is just properly using mesh shaders and streaming assets in. Even the textures aren't really new - Megascans has been out for a long time and games like Vanshing of Ethan Carter has made great use of it even with yesteryear memory budgets. https://quixel.com/megascans/home/

Just want to point out that the reflection/refraction of water is not part of the fluid simulation - it's part of the lighting simulation/engine. That being said I don't think the simulation part of it looked great either. I'd like to see it with RT enabled though.

Great article Hilbert. The UE5 engine looks promising as an alternative for game developers.

after read more on it appear that is actual playable demo for what "games" could look like on next gen not what they will look like. yah I more interested in if Epic fix the there texture loading issue among there other issue unreal engine has had for last few incarnations of it

Very pretty but what stood out like a sore thumb was character interaction with the world. She didn't really look like she was walking in the world, more floating on top of it - the subtle ways our walking is effected by the environment were missing. When she put her hand on the wall it looked like her hand was near the wall not on it - the skin should squish against the wall a bit as you apply pressure. The water too, while there was some sort of interaction it still felt like she was moving without it effecting her. All her clothing and hair didn't really feel correct either, it was kind of there and the hair swished a bit but it didn't feel like it was being realistically effected by her movement.

Great find. I bet Tim Sweeney is so glad that he can employ people cleverer than him. I think I would call it Unreal Engine Paradigm. But Tim's the Boss and so 5 it is. 🙂

I wouldn't worry too much about the character interaction with the world as its a tech demo and not a game. It does look great, but Epic has been putting out amazing looking tech demo's for years now, Samaritan is nearly 10 years old. This is more like gameplay, but if its "scripted" gameplay then not that much better than a scripted cutscene.

I think this demo just didn't focus on the character model, but the environment. Look at Senua's Sacrifice for example, which was made using UE4, and it looks amazing - even compared to the character model here.

This looks more then just a demo though, it had playstation button prompts on screen, which makes me think this will be a ps5 title.

Im hoping next gen tomb raider game will look like this. It reminded me of that right away.
