I guess this will be the new Crysis, the game that will bring gaming rigs to their knees for the next few years! But can it run Alan Wake 2! Hmm, doesn't have the same ring to it though.

Well, it has to compete with CP2077 for this title. And arguably, they got a lot more options to play with than we know of AW2 so far. Still, it's a very good looking game. One that I'd personally be curious about to see on how it looks and plays both with RT and without it. Since with an atmospheric, story driven game, I could imagine that designing your surroundings and leveles with RT in mind makes a huge difference to designing it for no RT and then slapping it on top of it. We shall see if I want to buy into Remedy's exclusive strategy tough...

Nah, you are confusing this mostly closed world game with barely 5 npcs at a time with Cyberpunk 2077, which is the real deal.

Hundreds of NPCs are probably easier for RT/PT than lots of foliage with transparency.

This is the future we are heading to. Games are made with upscalers in mind literally unplayable natively and without dlss3/fsr3 even with the high end gpus. Cant wait for dlss4 frame regeneration. 😀

Plenty of people are working on these things. Nvidia has show cased deep learning AI for NPCs and how that could lead to things you're talking about: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/nvidia-ace-for-games-generative-ai-npcs/ Also games have been using ray propagation for sound for years - there just isn't much need for like anything crazy there. You can fire like a couple dozen rays to get accurate sound, not the hundreds of thousands needed for graphics.

Why does that matter? We already have Cyberpunk 2077/Control/Doom Eternal, etc - all universally agreed to be great games and feature Raytracing. Even if this game sucks it's not because it has RT or DLSS/Upscaling. Clearly others were able to do it - even Remedy with Control.

Using available technologies to make your game look as good as possible is what smart developers/studio would do. Gaming industry is much more crowded now compare to a decade ago, much tougher to sell games nowadays.... I will give an example, Hades won several games award in 2021, sold 1mil copies in 2 years, that's a mighty low numbers, most people would rather play pretty looking and fun games.
