HDD revenue at record level thanks to high prices

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Research firm iSuppli reports sales of hard disk drives totaled $9.6 billion in the first quarter of the year, a new record thanks to higher average selling prices since the Thai floods severely disrupted the HDD production chain. The record revenue occurs even though shipments fell from 174 million units in Q3 2011 to 145 million units in Q1 2012. iSuppli believes it will take until Q3 2012 before HDD production will recover to pre-flood shipment levels.

The global hard disk drive (HDD) industry surged to record revenue in the first quarter, thanks to higher average selling prices that compensated for the wreckage and loss in shipments left by the October floods in Thailand, according to an IHS iSuppli Storage Market Brief report from information and analytics provider IHS (NYSE: IHS).

HDD revenue for the first quarter reached $9.6 billion, an industry high that bested the previous record of $9.3 billion in the first quarter of 2010. The rise in HDD revenue occurred even though shipments during the first quarter of 145 million units were less than the 174 million units of the third quarter last year, just before destructive floods in October damaged a wide swath of HDD factories located in Thailand. A full recovery to pre-flood shipment levels is not expected until the third quarter, one full year after the disaster.

Corsair launches Neutron Series solid-state drives

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Cprsair launches the Neutron Series solid-state drives (SSDs), the industry's first consumer SSDs to feature the LM87800 6Gb/s SSD controller from Link_A_Media Devices (LAMD). Also available in an extreme performance Neutron GTX model, the new SSDs bring professional-grade performance and reliability to PC enthusiasts, content creators, and IT professionals.

Available in capacities of 120GB, 240GB and 480GB, Neutron Series GTX SSDs are designed with toggle NAND flash memory to deliver up to a super-high 90,000 random read and write IOPs (input/output operations per second), which speeds up data-intensive tasks like video and image editing. These drives also provide superior sequential speeds of up to 555 MB/s read and 500 MB/s write, for lightning fast file access.  The standard Neutron Series models, available in 120GB and 240GB capacities, provide up to 90,000 random read IOPs and 85,000 random write IOPs with sequential speeds of up to 555 MB/s read and 370 MB/s write. i

All Neutron Series models incorporate LAMD's powerful on-the-fly error correction and advanced NAND management technologies which improve the endurance of onboard flash memory, giving the SSD's enhanced reliability and durability. The Neutron Series GTX drives also include adaptive DSP technology which maintains superior performance throughout the lifetime of the SSD. Neutron Series and Neutron Series GTX models are backed with a 5 year warranty.

Neutron Series SSDs provide impressive read and write speeds with both compressed and non-compressible data regardless of file type. This is a significant advantage compared to other SSDs on the market which offer quick load times with compressible files, but get bogged down significantly when reading compressed data such as video files.

"The Neutron Series SSDs, a strategic collaboration between Corsair and LAMD, reflects the shared commitment to performance, quality, and reliability ingrained in our companies," said Thi La, Vice President of Memory Products at Corsair. "Together we've raised the standard for SSDs, and we have more exciting products on the way."

"LAMD has built our reputation engineering high-performance, high-reliability SSD controllers for mission-critical enterprise storage solutions," said Dr. Hemant Thapar, CEO of LAMD. "Now, with Corsair’s commitment to delivering innovative, high-performance SSD solutions, we are pleased to bring our advancements in SSD technology to all PC users."

The new SSDs bring broad compatibility for desktop and notebook PCs thanks to their standard 2.5

10-Channel SATA III SSDs inbound

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Biwin announced the world's first 10-channel 2.5-inch SATA III (6 Gbits/sec) SSD, the enterprise class NuvoDrive NX, offered in 80 GB, 160 GB and 300 GB capacities.

Virtually all current SATA III SSDs have 4- or 8-channel controllers. The NuvoDrive NX's is based on an advanced new 10-channel controller that alleviates the issue of flash bandwidth on the SATA III bus for high speed sequential transfers. The 10-channel controller also, for the first time, makes popular 80 GB, 160 GB and 300 GB capacities available in a SATA III SSD.

NuvoDrive NX features a large 256 MB DRAM cache to dramatically accelerate random write performance. NuvoDrive NX will deliver up to 80,000 4K random write IOPS for both compressible and incompressible data types. It supports sequential read and write speeds upwards of 500 MB/sec.

NuvoDrive NX SSDs are equipped with all the latest endurance, reliability and security features including: BCH ECC built in, global wear leveling, AES 128 and 256 encryption, native TRIM support, and support for SMART commands. NuvoDrive NX is sampling now to OEMs, and will be in mass production in Q3. Biwin will showcase a working demo system with the NuvoDrive NX at Computex Taipei, June 5-9 in Nangang Hall booth # J1218.

Supporting Quote
"The Biwin NuvoDrive NX offers superior write speed compared to existing SATA III SSDs. Its advantage increases in small block random writes. And it beats competing SSDs hands down in 4K random write operations for incompressible data. Technology innovations like the 10-channel controller architecture and beefy DRAM cache make this performance possible." - Joe James, Vice President of Worldwide Marketing, Biwin America.

HDD prices continue slow decline

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

An updated chart reflects the evolution of the pricing of hard disk drives since the Thai floods in October. Prices have fallen slightly since the previous chart that was published in early-April, but it appears they're stabilizing at a "new normal".

Prices have fallen slightly since our early-April update. The Deskstar 7K1000.D 1TB has enjoyed the most dramatic drop, and it can now be had for an even hundred bucks. Our favorite mechanical drive, Samsung's Spinpoint F3 1TB, was briefly down to $80 before returning to $110. (If you enter the promo code EMCYTZT1637 before tomorrow, you can nab the drive for $80.) Both of those terabyte drives cost less than WD's Caviar Black, which has at least been discounted by $10 over the past month and a half.

The other drives we've been following are low-RPM "green" models from Samsung and WD. These higher-capacity drives have dropped in price slightly since the beginning of April, but the cuts only amount to $10 per drive. We're still a long way from pre-flooding levels. [via techreport]
