China blocks YouTube over Tibet protests

Review 567 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

BEIJING - China blocked access to YouTube.com on Sunday after dozens of videos of recent protests in Tibet appeared on the popular U.S. video Web site.

The blocking added to the communist government's efforts to control what the public saw and heard about protests that erupted Friday in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa, against Chinese rule.

Access to YouTube.com, usually readily available in China, was blocked after videos appeared on the site Saturday showing foreign news reports about the Lhasa demonstrations, montages of photos, and scenes from Tibet-related protests abroad.

There were no protest scenes posted on China-based video Web sites such as 56.com, youku.com and tudou.com.

The Chinese government has not commented on its move to prevent access to YouTube. Internet users trying to call up the Web site are presented with a blank screen.

Chinese leaders encourage Internet use for education and business but use online filters to block access to material considered subversive or pornographic.

Foreign Web sites run by news organizations and human rights groups are regularly blocked if they carry sensitive information. Operators of China-based online bulletin boards are required to monitor their content and enforce censorship.

China has at least 210 million Internet users, according to the government, and is expected to overtake the United States soon to become the biggest population of Web surfers.

Beijing tightened controls on online video with rules that took effect Jan. 30 and limited video-sharing to state-owned companies.

Regulators backtracked a week later, apparently worried they might disrupt a growing industry, and said private companies that already were operating legally could continue. They said any new competitors will be bound by the more stringent restrictions.

OnLive - Games On Demand Service Announced

Games 1603 Published by Thorsten Finck 0

At the currently ongoing 2009 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, a new company called OnLive introduced itself to the gaming world with a bold claim. Based in Palo Alto, California, OnLive, the name of both the company and its on demand online gaming platform, is presenting a games on demand service, promising to instantly deliver the latest high-end titles over home broadband Internet to the TV and entry-level PCs and Macs. In it's current development state, OnLive is supposed to deliver fullscreen gaming action at a resolution of up to 1280 x 720 at 60 fps - if you do have a 5Mbps connection. The slower your connection, the smaller the resolution gets, of course.

According to OnLive's CEO, Steve Perlman, this new technology was being developed and worked on for seven years already and is paying tribute to the wide availability of consumer broadband connectivity and the shift to cloud computing in general. Perlman states that their new video compression algorithm only takes one millisecond of lag to encode the video.

This is the main idea behind OnLive:

  • Connect to OnLive with your TV, PC or Mac (either directly or with their MicroConsole) and start a game
  • Your game runs in a state-of-the-art OnLive game server center
  • OnLive connects you to game servers through the Internet, instantly sending your controller actions upstream and the results back downstream at blinding fast speeds
  • Enjoy ultra high-performance gameplay on your TV or entry-level PC or Mac

So far, nine prominent game publishers already announced that they are going to actively support OnLive: Atari, Codemasters, Eidos, Electronic Arts, Epic, Take Two, THQ, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros.

The official, public launch of this service is scheduled for winter 2009 and a beta for summer 2009. So, keep your eyes open for updates on this interesting new service...

RV790 Radeon 4890 could do 1 GHz

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageWe spotted many reports and photo's already with info on the upcoming RV790 release from ATI (Radeon HD 4890).  As seems now the GPU clocks on that product will get specced at 850 MHz. There however is a lot of stuff happening.

It looks like the board partners will do a lot of customized models, and apparently some of them can even reach a core clock frequency of an astounding 1.00 GHz.

On a Chinese tech forum PCInLife they have shown that the RV790 rather reached the 1 GHz mark, easily.

The overclocker reached speeds of 1 GHz (core) but that didn't stop right there. The reference memory clock frequency will be 3900 MHz right, well the overclocker reached 1125 MHz (=4.50 GHz effective, memory). To proof a point, this card ran 3DMark Vantage on eXtreme settings.

The X-mode returned a a score of X5480. That's smackdown right in-between the GeForce GTX 280 and GeForce GTX 285. Considering they had to be using a Beta driver, in combo with official drivers performance might be even a tad better.

Mobile phone now a shaver as well

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

In extraordinary weird news today we can report that the Chinese developped the Cooler758 razor phone, which can be used as a shaver. Their Razor phone is quite literally a razor, just pop off the bottom cap and you have a fully functional shaver. Additionally, the phone has a touchscreen, 2 megapixel digicam and dual-SIM capability.

Heheh, crazy ... stupid, but crazy. Definitely beats GPS capability on a phone though :)

Just pop the cap off the bottom and you've got a fully functional shaving implement, perfect for rubbing across your chin repeatedly in a vain hope that it'll knock off a few bristles before that very important meeting you're late and ill-prepared for.

CryENGINE 3 Teaser Video

Lot's of game related news-items today. PC.IGN has got a sneak peek at Crytek's CryENGINE 3 trailer. According to Crytek, the trailer features both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 footage. The video is meant as a tech demo only, so the fact that it features nanosuit-clad soldiers from Crysis running around doesn't necessarily mean anything concrete.

It could just be that Crytek recycled some of its existing assets. No titles have been officially announced that will be built on CryENGINE 3 as of yet. Well, check it out I'd say.

ASUS preps High-End Non-Reference HD 4890 Accelerator

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Our colleagues over at Techpowerup have some photos of a custom design Radeon HD 4890 graphics card from ASUS.

As it looks, this model will have an enhanced 100% digital PWM design, 6+2 phase power controlled by VRM controller chips that can be controlled by software, one 8-pin PCIe power connector instead of two, a Fujitsu high-density ML capacitor for better voltage regulation and a high-performance cooler.

  • 100% digital PWM design - something the reference PCB features too, but enhanced by a small design change by ASUS
  • The 6+2 phase power circuit is controlled by two independent VRM controller chips, the vGPU can be controlled by software, and can be set up to 1.4 V with the included software
  • An 8-pin PCI-E power input replaces one of two 6-pin inputs on the reference model. This is said to add electrical stability and increase overclocking headroom
  • ASUS added the industry's highest-quality voltage regulation thanks to the Fujitsu high-density ML capacitor, that facilitates the lowest ESR, and is best suited for digital PWM circuits (the cleanest power makes it to the GPU)
  • The GPU is expected to be clocked above 900 MHz, with the GDDR5 memory at 1000 MHz (4.00 GHz effective)
  • It will feature a non-reference high-performance cooler, which doesn't want to be pictured yet

The clockspeeds of this Radeon HD 4890 are expected to be well over 900MHz for the GPU, with GDDR5 memory at 4000MHz. Pricing and availability is unknown, but the reference design should be launched in the second week of April for just shy of $250.

Philips Force Feedback Jacket Being Tested

Generic News 1994 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Interesting news from tomshardware today. As it seems Dutch absed Philips Electronics is working on a Force Feedback jacket, allowing end-users feel their multimedia content in an entirely new way:

The jacket developed by Philips Electronic is built around a series of physical actuators to affect the user, instead of sound or motion based vibration. Sixty-four independently controlled actuators are distributed throughout the jacket, from the torso down to the arms. The sixty-four actuators are paired in arrays of four and linked via a serial bus, with each array sharing its own microprocessor.

Surprisingly, the power needs of the jacket are small. Just two AA batteries can power the jacket for one full hour, even if twenty of the actuators were triggered continuously.

Even more impressive is the actual rate in which the actuators can be triggered. Each actuator is capable of being cycled on and off at a rate of 100 times per second. While the bulk of the actuators are centered around the torso, the arms still receive sufficient stimulation with its eight actuators per sleeve. By using four actuators in the front and four in the back of each sleeve, the sensation of an arm being touched or tapped in several different spots is achieved through a phenomenon called the "cutaneous rabbit illusion."

Certainly interesting in concept, we definitely look forward to seeing this technology in action in not just movie based applications, but also in games.

Windows 7 expected to spur NAND flash demand

Storage 785 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

DigiTimes reports that Memory makers are looking forward to Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system. They expect the SSD optimizations in the new operating system will spur demand for NAND flash (SOlid State) memory.

At the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in November 2008, Microsoft senior lead program manager Leon Braginski claimed that the Windows 7 would work better with SSDs. Optimizing SSDs for the upcoming OS has become focus for SSD manufacturers and notebook makers in the midst of the current market uncertainty.

NAND flash chipmakers are also pinning hopes on the new OS, according to industry sources, with SSDs expected be favored for more new-generation PC models.

Chinese claims success against game addiction

Games 1603 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

The Chinese government has reported that measures it has been taking to counter what it perceives as online games addiction in the country's youth has been a success.

Communicating through the state news agency Xinhua, the government said that the number of online gamers under 18 in 2008 has declined to 15 per cent of survey respondents - a 7 per cent drop from the previous year's 183 million.

China's General Administration of Press and Publication instituted the clamp down on online games in 2007, by limiting gamers to three hour sessions, and requiring them to register to each game with real names and national card numbers to ensure they are over 18.

According to the US Congressional-Executive Commission on China, the GAPP is one of China's main governmental bodies responsible for censorship, such as banning 19 dictionaries in 2003.

BFG EX-1200 Power Supply review | test

Review 567 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

BFG today launched their new EX-1200 power supply. A beast of a PSU that is  reasonably affordable. A power supply that is silent, efficient, has long cabling, is pure quality, has an ATX size chassis, is completely themed dark and perhaps after all these years might be able to replace my kilowatt PSUs. As what BFG is bringing to the table is comforting.

This 1200 Watt  piece of machinery is fairly close to what I consider perfection in terms of design and requirements .. and with a price just under 250 USD, BFG might have something really special on their hands. Guru3D reviews this all new monster.

GeForce GTX 275 specs surface

Graphics Cards 1673 Published by Hilbert Hagedoorn 0

Guru3D.com ImageMuch like AMD with the Radeon 4890 and specification leaking all the time, it seems to be similar for NVIDIA. As you guys have heard a gazillion times already NVIDIA will release the GeForce GTX 275 as reaction to the new Radeon HD 4890 graphics card.

As it seems the card will have a full set of shader processors accumulating up towards 240, just like the GTX 285. The difference in-between these two needs to be found in the memory bandwidth as the GTX 275 will have a 448-bit memory bus.

It is now rumored that the GTX 275e the following clock frequencies:

  • Core clock 633MHz
  • Shader clock 1404MHz
  • Memory clock 1161MHz (x2)

GPU Shaders Mem Shaders  Mem bus  framebuffer Price
NVIDIA
