Unity Offers Apology and Upcoming Changes to the Game Engine Price System

Published by

Unity has released an official statement addressing misunderstandings related to their recently introduced prize system for their game engine. In light of the concerns, Unity plans to review and amend its policies, with more specifics to be revealed in the upcoming week. As of now, Unity hasn't detailed the changes to its pricing structure.

In the new system under debate, developers are required to compensate for each game installation that utilizes the Unity Engine, with conditions in place, such as a benchmark of 200,000 game installations and revenue surpassing $200,000 in the past year. Previously, Unity had indicated that the modifications would not affect a vast majority of their current clients. However, the game developer community has expressed reservations, pointing out inconsistencies with prior user agreements and potential inequity.

We have heard you. We apologize for the confusion and angst the runtime fee policy we announced on Tuesday caused. We are listening, talking to our team members, community, customers, and partners, and will be making changes to the policy. We will share an update in a couple of days. Thank you for your honest and critical feedback.
