Seagate has made an announcement regarding the release of its 30-terabyte hard drives, which are anticipated to hit the market in early 2024. Upcoming hard drives will leverage Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology, with each drive consisting of ten platters, each holding 3 terabytes of data.

While a 30-terabyte model was confirmed, discussions also alluded to a potential 32-terabyte version. Despite initial plans to introduce these hard drives in the third quarter of 2023, the release has been rescheduled for the first quarter of the following year. Mosley pointed out that this launch would mark the beginning of a significant expansion phase for the company.

Seagate is also setting its sights on developing 40-terabyte hard drives, which would utilize 4-terabyte platters. According to Mosley, this advancement might materialize within the next two years. Seagate's hard drives, stating that they provide mass data storage solutions at less than one-fifth the cost per bit compared to NAND flash solutions. He projected that this cost advantage in data center architectures would likely remain for at least the next decade.

Despite the decreasing cost of SSD storage, HDDs are expected to remain the preferred option for mass storage in data centers for the foreseeable future due to their capacity advantages. Reflecting on the evolution of storage capacities, Seagate's progress is noteworthy, considering they reached a milestone of 16 terabytes only in 2018, and are now poised to double that capacity.
